I was at a local hillclimb today, trying out my new camera. It was a really cool event, with lots of interesting cars in attendance, including several beater/rat rods mixing it with the high dollar machines. So without further adieu, here are some photos, mostly resized to 800 by 600 pixels.

This early Cortina was my favorite car present - 1500cc pushrod motor with massive carbs, aggressive cam & straight through exhaust, sounded glorious.

Excellent stuff! Thanks for the pics.

I really wanna know what it takes to set up a hillclimb. I have a lot of dream roads in mind.

Where are you? Doesn't look like Caribbean, Aussie? GB? Mostly RHD, British cars.

Just went over the pic's again. Did I see a blue, Old Skool Deuce high boy roadster back there? With a roll bar, too, so it must have been competing!

Good eye! It was out early with a mechanical problem. However, here's a shot from round 1 of the same hillclimb, a couple of months ago.

And yeah, I'm in Australia.

(If you're in the US)

The best way I can suggest is (1)involvement with your local SCCA Region as they have a Time Trials (used to be called Solo I) program(not to disparage any other organization but SCCA seems to also have the best insurance).

(2) You've got a road(s) in mind. Our hillclimbs in PA run from 1 to 2.6 mi in length. Is the road in good repair? There should be NO segment of road where a car is out of sight of a corner worker. How many stations will you need and will you have enough people to man the stations (Preferably two per station with red flags, fire bottles, and some sort of communication, either radio or hard-wire)? How are you going to time the cars? We use an electric-eye even though the picture of the M3 shows a hockey-stick.

(3) Is there a place to have a paddock; large field to base the cars between runs? Is there a return road to return cars to the bottom of the hill? Otherwise you will have to have breaks in the runs to return the cars, also you will need a SAFE place at the top for cars (at a SAFE distance from the finish line)to wait to return.

(4) Once you have established the course and method of returning to the start line, a SCCA Safety Steward should look at your course to see if there are any hidden danger points.

(5) You should then approach the local volunteer fire company and present this as a community involvement/fund raising opportunity for them. These are the folks who will be invaluable in helping you get township/county/ state permission to use the road.

These are only the basics. Have fun!

We got alfetta sedans in the USA. Most of them are terribly rusty now thugh, and they arent easy to get parts for.

I really love the Anglia, the Renault Alpine and the Spridget with the Sebring nose.

Here in the eastern USA, we have the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association (PHA).......a great group with a long history.

In Illinois there are no hillclimb events. It turns aout that an actual hill is required............

I'd not heard of the Mt. Leura hillclimb before, looks like a fun course though. Rob Roy is a bit short, really. The Vic Alfa club is organising a stint at the Hunted Hills hillclimb soon, so I should be along for a run with them.

I think hillclimbing (in Australia at least) is a great entry into motorsports. You only a need a basic CAMS license and some simple safety equipment to compete; you can drive at your own pace, and it's relatively safe anyway.

Those of us in the Northeast USA hate you for the climate that keeps those cars from rusting away.

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY DEPARTMENT: (And I am not making this up)

I used to own the red #53 Sprite. Actually that car has been competed almost continuously since the late '60s! The original owner got the car back after about three others of us also ran it and did well...

I ran in the VHCC in the 90's before coming across the pond, won the Group 2E championship in 97 and 98 in my RX3. It is more fun than you can imagine even had a privateer V8 Supercar turn up once and the legendary 1000 whp Stic GTR

Maybe it's just my imagination, but it looks like the guy in the #78 Midget is wearing a blazer and a dress shirt.

Also, I gotta get to Australia someday. If only to find out why our cockatoos are such psychos.

Some really interesting cars there! Oh, and keep sending the Holdens, they are the only decent thing GM has going over here!
