Walking to the end of the street and taking neighbor's 26' sailboat, sailing south down the bay to Cape Charles. The weather Friday could make things interesting. But I'd be able to sail hop down the coast to swap boats for vehicles as needed. I'd also recommend that others car hop as needed.

so wait, shall we assume that the general populous is dead. So that means that most all the armed forces? So, where is the nearest, newest battleship...eerrr...destroyer equivalent that is nuclear powered?

Want to travel, get something with a big enough tank to go garner one of those. Then you can go on a vacation.

Also, i suspect that steaming out on a nuclear warship isnt was easy clutch starting a miata.

I need more info on the scenario.

Option 1. Some thing has actually killed everyone else in the center of the country but the coast and or overseas countries are safe. I am in no imminent danger from zombies, germ war fair, dirty nuke etc. Fact is I have time. I go to the Ford dealer and steal the keys for a new Raptor. I grab a full set of wheels and tires from another for back up. I fill the bed with a jack, chain, rope, fuel and a hand pump plus tools etc. This will allow me travel across country and drive around any road block. I fill the cab with camp gear. I have paper maps of the country and all states between me and the East coast plus compass etc. but satalites are still up there so GPS should work. With no imminent threat I can carefully make my way across country using the hand pump to refill my gas cans to make sure I never run out of gas. Food isn't an issue as I can walk into any store.

Scenario 2. Zombies, or something that does pose a threat to my continued existence but I know I'll be safe at the coast. I know the basics of flight so I find a Cessna 172. It's the easiest plane to fly and has enough payload that I can fill the tanks and take more with me. Full tank, flying slow I can make the east coast in one slow hop. I still fill up extra tanks and take them with me. I can land at any strip, the bigger the better so I can be clear of danger. Refill and carry on.

Scenario 3. It's a continent or world wide issue. berkeley the coast. I'm getting a big ass van, filling it with all the hand tools, camp gear, food, gas etc I can from Home Depot and the local garages. Then I fill up with several weeks of food. I hit up peoples houses rather than stores for guns, amo and the food. I then head North to Makinaw city and grab a boat to get me and my stuff to Mackinac island where I set up home for the long term. I can make supply trips to the mainland at night. Oh yeah, I also snagged some ham radio equipment to look for other survivors. I'm handy enough to survive on the island long term and can collect enough dry/canned food to survive for several years until I can get on with growing some crops and raising some live stock. I also set up several dumps of food, camp gear, amo, gas etc at points on both the mainland upper and lower peninsular (at least 6 different locations in case they are found, raided or otherwise lsot to me) with several boats kept fueled and ready to go at points around the island in summer and snow mobiles in the winter in case I need to get off the island ASAP.

Original coastal plan, NYC is ~200 miles, revised "boarder run" ~200 miles to either Niagara or due north to the east end of Lake Ontario. All within range of the truck with a full tank. I also have 20+ gallons worth of gas cans I can fill by siphoning the other cars in the driveway. Onhand is 4 guns and probably 2000 rounds of ammunition. Any of those is an day trip even in the midst apocalypse with upstate NY winter.

Mexico would be the same but I would take the CVT Subi, 30+ mpg, minimal loss of capability. I already have a pantry full of canned food to take and a camp stove to heat it with.

I go to work, click the mouse a few times on the computer with the week of UPS battery and backup diesel. Then I use my trunked vhf radio to get ahold of one of the dams on the Missouri. (If I can't get through I'll drive over myself to the nearest.)

Someone at the dam runs around for an hour and lines things up and bam, black started hydroelectric plant.

Back to work and depending on what still works either via remote or on the drive back I lineup the grid to get power to whatever can still use it.

Once the first town is back up I swing in to whoever the local propane supplier is and top off all their delivery trucks, both with propane and diesel. Similarly, since the gas pumps should be working I keep an eye out for 1202 (diesel) and 1203 (gasoline) placards on semi tanker trailers and round up one of each and top them off by pumping out however many gas stations it takes.

Since lights are on in this town, it's time to go shopping. Food, firearms, camping gear, just drive the pallets back into whatever truck is backed up to the loading dock at WalMart. Good thing they sell plastic totes, makes it easier to empty shelves in the grocery section. Save room in the back for the contents of the closest liquor store too.

Drive the loaded trucks home. Stop by and empty the gun shop 5-miles from the house. Swing by the local truck stop, drive home 30 trucks and line them up around my place as a wall. Nab a big dozer from the tractor dealership to dig a trench around the trailers, using the dirt to fill in underneath them. Park dozer as gate.

Back to bed.

I'd take the long range tank off my DRZ and put it on my TTR125 (should be good for ~500 miles). Load TTR into the back of my pickup, grab a transfer pump for refueling and bring a backpack with some food and supplies. Drive pickup until stuck/broken/can't refuel, then finish the journey on my tiny adventure bike.

if the great lakes count as a coast, i can get there in anything without stopping for gas. i have dozens of ways to get to any part of lake erie in my area within 40 minutes, say if the interstates are clogged with burned out cars and dead bodies. boom, i'm there. i swing by my uncle's place and if he's dead i take all his guns and ammo. if he is alive, i take him plus all his guns and ammo. the avalanche can probably make it 30 miles without blowing up, however i can hook up trailer in 3 minutes and be towing ready to go backup plan with me, the datsun is always loaded and ready to go, and i have extra batteries.

option b is drive avalanche to the dodge dealer, drive through the front window and steal the keys to a new cummins truck. it's not stealing if survival is involved. also, i have 50' coils of heater hose and a drill mounted pump, plus cordless drills and vehicle chargers. i could refill from any station with fuel in the tanks by dropping the hose down the correct hole(yellow cap diesel).

New scenario.

The first one seems to have been figured out by many people in different ways. Let’s make it harder.

You've booked a vacation to Australia over Christmas and are looking forward to Going. Flu season is coming and the usual scare mongering is going on to get a flu shot, as usual you don't as the only people you know who get the flu are those who get the shot. But oh E36 M3, when flu season hits you are one of the first to get it. You get it hard, real real bad and end up in hospital wishing you were dead. For a few days you are in and out of consciousness and are kept going via if fluids. You recover and after a week or so at home you go back to work with your down under holiday looming. The issue is the flue gets worse, it’s around the world now and it’s affecting more and more people in more and more ways. People are starting to die. Then some people who recover are starting to act strangely. Their basic personalities are getting exaggerated. Quiet people are going totally inwards. Extroverts are totally out there with no inhibitions, angry people are turning violent.

It’s time for your trip. After being very carefully checked and your medical history examined you are let on the plane. Being down under it’s a long flight, buy the time you wake up the world has gone to hell. Planes are being turned back from destinations, but as your plane is already close to Oz they have to let you land because of fuel. Your plane is diverted to Alice Springs as its remote and cut off. You land but are not allowed off the plane. Soon there’s a perimeter set up with food, water, shelter provided inside a fence with armed guards all in Hazmat gear. You’re kept here in quarantine, but you have media access. The world is going to hell fast. The flu is now killing 95% of people. Of those who survive the after effects are getting worse. People either becoming so passive they just stay where they are and eventually die of dehydration, some go crazy, some go totally violent and will kill or destroy anything on site. It seems like the only people who are surviving OK are those like you who got the bug early and recovered before it mutated, you seem to be immune to the later stronger strain.

Pretty soon the guards on the base are dead, killed, crazy or gone as are most of your companions on the flight. You survived by climbing back on the plane and locking the doors from the inside along with a young mother and her baby. By the time the E36 M3 has died down outside the plane and you venture out the airport is destroyed by the crazies, you manage to find your way into town but that’s pretty much burned to the ground from looters and crazies. Most (not all) stuff that could be of use is burned, destroyed or looted.

Before things finally hit the E36 M3ter you are aware that there is a survivor center in Melbourne that you assume is still there and operating as they were already talking about only taking early survivors before the news went dead. You have to get the three of you there. Unlike last time it’s not a relatively short hop with easy access to food, water, transport or weapons and you know the likelihood that any other survivors you meet will be bat guano crazy and trying to kill you. They are not super human zombies though, just regular people with regular people power weather they were a 12 year old kid, a 30 year old police man or a 70 year old woman before they went nuts. They can still think and reason as a normal person, just a homicidal maniac normal person.

Go save yourself, the young woman and her baby.

Alice Springs and Adelaide were chosen by my poor knowledge of Australia based on the fact they are far apart and Alice Springs in the middle of know where. If you happen to be reading from there, pretend you’re not from there and have no more knowledge of the area, terrain etc. than any other Northern Hemisphere visitor.

Get in CRV AWD I own. Go to local gun store and take all ammo .45 .38 .22 12 gauge ammo I can find and guns of same caliber. Also take 30-06 and H&K 308 (we have a FFL store 10 blocks from me). Raid grocery store for food.

siphon gas fill CRV. pack clothes, guns, wife, kids, dog, cats and food in car. Drive south to Savanna. refill and wait 5 days, scavenge for dry food along the way and in Savanna.

This is for first scenario as I live in DC and we are about to get hit with a snow storm in said 6 day window.

The car, make sure it has tinted windows and no one would assume anyone would be stupid enough to be inside it trying to escape so he'd be safe as houses going in there.

Bugger. Too much back story. You're in Alice Springs (Northern Territory) and need to get to Adelaide (A berkeley of a long way away across inhospitable dry land) Little water, not much food, no infrastructure and anything alive probably wants to kill you and way way less access to weapons than here. I always theorized that offshore oil rigs would be great, mostly self sustaining (water and energy wise) and as long as the fish aren't zombies I might be okay! Lucky for me I've got a boat big enough to get to the coast and the gulf coast is littered with oil rigs. Other option is high tail north and find a mountain pass I can defend, make like dwarves and build a home in the mountain. Oh and I've had a "zombie closet" for 5 years stocked with guns, ammo, and survival gear I'm ready to go. I just need to build myself a uaz 469 with a 1.9tdi for my escape vehicle. Or maybe k5 military blazer with a 4bt swap

Harder than starting/driving a miata, but not all that hard. FYI, the only operation nuclear powered surface ships that the U.S. currently has are aircraft carriers. Forget the trying to use a destroyer or cruiser since they run on gas turbine engines and need refueled every few days. Hold out for a submarine. You can make your own air, water, and electricity. You can carry a lot of food. You would need a crew of people to operate it though. Not just the power plant, but also the boat itself so you don't die. The ocean is always trying to kill you when you are on a sub.
