I'm guessing that they're going for some normally-aspirated displacement class and feel that this is the best way to achieve high power. Wonder what rpm they pulled there, as it didn't sound like 12K, but what do I know.

One issue with such designs are the harmonic resonances of the crank. Big companies have the deep pockets to determine and suppress the torsional oscillations, which can cause failure in a big way.

I've seen some YouTube videos from that shop, those guys build some interesting stuff.  They have a model A Ford engine that is converted to over head cam.  It's really fascinating.

Pete Aardema holds a ton of records. I have a lot of respect for what those guys do. I have no doubt eventually they will have this one locked in and figured out as well. 

Here's that OHV converted flathead you were talking about.  Those guys truly build some neat stuff and have some wild ideas. Started with a set of Subaru heads for the OHV conversion and eventually wound up with scratch built heads sunk into the bore. There's also some v12 videos up with him...and some 3l sheet metal engine stuff. And on and on.  Well worth watching. They are brilliant grassroots minds.

Anyway that trans is probably an airshifted liberty, like we run in our stuff. And the v12 made something like 920-930hp at 10,000rpm.
