I always sort of assumed the hot rod Lincoln would have been a Lincoln.

Then you need to listen to the song again.

Thats awesome I love those flatheads. I'd love a model A, I hear they actually move and drive like a car and can be driven.

Old Cars Weekly did an article on this car maybe 10 years ago or so. Look at the video closely and you'll spot one feature that agrees with the original lyrics, that later recordings changed. Originally:

Got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up That Model A body makes it look like a pup. Got twelve cylinders and uses 'em all Got overdrive that just won't stall.

Yep, Commander Cody and Asleep at the Wheel both change it to eight cylinders, but count the spark plugs - you can see them clearly about 2/3 of the way through the video. I sing this song all the time at local karaoke and use the original lyrics, then have to explain it. Just have to do it early in the night, doesn't work too well after a few beers!

Useless info that might win you some trivia points.

I always wanted to learn how to play that song, however I play bass not guitar but if I ever did I would make it a point to be able to play that one.

One of the Lost Planet Airmen was a professor at my undergrad college, and I still have the record album Hot Rod Lincoln was on. I didn't find out until a couple of years ago that their version was actually a cover. shrug both versions are pretty good.

Les Claypool would play it anyway.

Man, I just see the bass as a fuzz-tone guitar dropped down an octave.

Why's that? I'd imagine that any flatty with 4.11 gears would have an RPM-limited top speed somewhere between "glacial" and "tortoise" unless you had an overdrive.

IIRC, a lot of early rods used Zephyr 3-speed transmissions with overdrive.

A guy in town just picked up a Lincoln V12 from the old mental hospital in North Battleford- it had been bolted to their backup generator way back whenever such a thing would have been fashionable. I've got no idea what kind of shape its in, but I'd bet if it was never drowned, its probably pretty nice.

Overdrives were available back then. Look into Borg Warner R10

I believe the "got overdrive just won't stall" is more for playing off the previous line of "it's got 12 cylinders and uses them all", but the V12 would have been torquier than the V8, and more forgiving of being placed in high gear too soon. At least that's how I choose to interpret it.

Funny, for the longest time I always thought that line was "with four revvin' gears you can really get lost". Didn't think to interpret that as "four-eleven", but that makes more sense.
