I got a set of wheels and tires for my truck, for a song. However, they're pretty gross. The chrome is pitted and flaking, and the aluminum is crusty. Example of the worst of it.

I have powder coating capabilities...

I know people in the plating industry, but I'd rather not spend that much.

Grind em. Paint it. Bronze. Something metallic.

Blast them with glass beads or walnut shells and then paint.

How hot do they have to get to cure the powder coat? I'd be afraid of accidentally annealing the metal in an oven.

This is also one of those projects that can expose the "It must be perfect!" versus the "It works, it's fine" philosophy crowds.

I have done that before, with flaking chrome wheels. Black. Looked decent enough. I'd go with a silver, this time around, though. Bronze might not look so good, on a truck that's Fine Silver Birch Metallic though. Or, maybe it would look sweet?

They don't need to be perfect, just not looking like ass, as they currently do. I remember the number of discussions, here, about PC temps and wheels...

There's going to be a lot of work to make those look decent.

What is your time worth?

In reply to Brett_Murphy :

Annealing temperatures and PC temps are drastically different. Our powder coating line runs at 250 I believe. Annealing is around 750. There is no risk.

I paid $200 to have some fittipaldis chrome stripped off. The chrome shops will do it but usually don’t admit it.

Grind with a flap wheel. Paint. Done.

Done it quite a few times over the years.

There is never any reason for hysteria about powder coating and wheels. A large percentage of new wheels are powder coated to begin with. It is safe.
