Specifically, are there any other subarus that have a transmission with the same gearing (at least the same final drive) as a 1996 legacy outback 5 speed? The transmission is getting a bit tired with almost 430k miles on it, and hasn't sounded very good for a long time. I have been looking for another 5 speed 96 outback, but since its the only year of legacy outback to come with a cable clutch transmission I dont know if there are any others I could get the transmission from. Maybe an outback sport?

Cable clutch AWD trannies date back to '89, so you've got a bit to look around at. I assume it's a 4.11FD(read the rear diff)? Find another 4.11 cable trans and pop it in, don't limit yourself to just the Outback. 1st gen Legacy and early Impreza 1.8 and 2.2 are potential donors. Can't remember when cable went the way of the dodo, but a coworker's '99 Leg Brighton was cable.

Where is the final drive marked on the transmission? I will have to check the rear diff and see what it says. It would be nice if its a common one, not having to swap the rear diff too would be nice.

Any other subaru trans with the same clutch type (pull vs push) and the same final drive should work, IIRC:
