The old Willys MB weighed 2500, and was barely there compared to a Wrangler. Those much bigger and heavier pieces on the Wrangler, like the axle assemblies, engine and such all add weight. Lots of weight, especially being iron and steel.

I heard that the new Wrangler will have some aluminum pieces.
