Here in Cleveland is a 300k Diesel Jetta that was donated and is now being sold off as a Salvage title. In Ohio, $50 will get this recertified as a rebuilt title. It seems unlikely that this will sell for more than $500.

How does diesel buy-back work?
Could this be bought for under $500 and then expect thousands from VW to buy it back?

That's a Mark IV, so the diesel buyback isn't relevant to it at all. It only applies to the 09+ cars IIRC.

Yep, only the later models. A coworker of mine had a 2013 Passat TDI. She got a nice check, something more than blue book value, from VW via a local dealer.

Thanks for the education. Okay, now look for '09+ opportunities.

You are pretty late on this, people stockpiled dozens of cheaper ones last year, and there aren't many listed for sale for less than the buyback price. I think you might have had to already own it by now too. The one in your picture is worth $2k easily if it's registered and running if you wanted to buy it anyway.

You had to own the vehicle before the scandal to qualify for the buyback anyway. Buying one now will do you no good.

Nope. You have to have owned the car before a certain date.

VW has rented huge parking lots to store the cars till the fix is approved and completed. They will then be resold. Here in MD, they have a huge lot at the Port of Baltimore where they are holding the cars.

In reply to Devilsolsi:

I just had a coworker mention that he's buying a brand new '15 or '16 Sportwagon diesel from a VW dealer. They've apparently retrofitted urea injection systems on the unsold stock and are re-offering them as new.

I've seen no mention of this in the media, but will certainly jump back into this thread if/when I see the car in person.

I had heard that rumor as well, but didn't really see it covered anywhere so figured it was BS. Interested to know if this is actually true.

Confirmed - New '15 Golf TDI Sportwagen w/retrofitted urea injection system showed up at work today. Supposed to be ~80 units allocated to the area (MA) with ~75% already spoken for.

So they're out there...

By 2015 all TDI cars came with "AdBlue" DEI injection, it's not retrofitted.

We sold our '14 TDI Sportwagen back to VW in March. Bought a '15 TDI Golf in April.

'15 and newer cars got the 3rd generation EA288 engine, that can allegedly really meet emission standards, which is why the leftovers can be sold. All the cars got some ECM tweaking before they could be sold, and will have some exhaust emission components replaced at a later date when parts are available.

Devilsolsi is correct, you had to have purchased a buy-back eligible TDI prior to the settlement announcement (Aug of '15 I think) to be able to take advantage of the buy back.

I do miss our '14 Sportwagen, but our '15 Golf is a little spunkier, plus we basically got to drive the Sportwagen for "free" for 2 years, and made out with ~$7K in our pocket after the buy-back and purchasing the Golf.
