Leaving at about 6pm from North Carolina going 7 hours down to Florida. In an old car and I'm not really wanting to idle for 2 hours in traffic. I usually don't travel the night before a holiday.. Wondering if I can talk my woman I to leaving later to let the traffic pass.
We are heading down to FL as well. Charlotte might be bad, other than that I suspect it will be ok.
It could be worse, you could be headed north.
If yall are come down 95 it tends to get bad towards the GA border in SC. Look at using 17 as it runs beside 95 a lot of the way down into FL. Bad part is 17 and 95 are the same in some sections.
I think because it turns into 2 roads? Either way I'm making a stop at South of the Border to pick up some mexican placematts or throw rugs for seat covers on my car.
It'll be bad.
Going from Chicago to Indianapolis tonight. Google maps says it should be 3 hours 5 minutes. If I make it under 4 I'll be happy. We're leaving at 7PM; I don't think 6PM would get us there any sooner.
I keep seeing stories about how this will be the most travelled weekend since 2007.
Ironically I too am going to Florida, but by plane. However, the timespan from when I get in my car to go to the airport to arrival will be about 8+ hours.
I think Google Maps has live traffic info, also.
Google Maps does have live traffic. There's a bit of a delay, but it's reasonably accurate. I'll often run Maps while driving for that purpose even if I don't need the directions. Occasionally, it will route me around back-ups and accidents with amazing foresight.
Lucky for me, my extent of travel on Thursday will be about 20 feet from my bedroom to my kitchen.
We aren't traveling on Thursday, but are on Fri, and then also on Sat/Sun. Hopefully it is less brutal by then. Coming home Sunday will probably be rough.
Your berkeleyed. 95 South in Jacksonville was bumper to bumper at 1530 so it's not rush hour traffic. Start looking at the side roads.
In reply to Stampie:
17 also goes thru Charleston in SC. Major traffic at rush hour without the holiday.
Yea but you can take the Mark Clarke 526 around that. I'd actually be looking for something heading south of Columbia towards Waycross, GA.
I think everyone should do like me. I stocked up on food and whiskey. Once I get home at 5 it'll be me and the Xbox until Friday.

That's the way to do it.

Me too! Right down to the xbox.
When I worked in Chicago I would take vacation Thanksgiving Day week just because the afternoon traffic is so bad.
