TIL pacer window glass was too tall to package inside the doors.

Did you know that the Pacer was supposed to be a FWD rotary? If GM didn't kill their program it would have been one of the earliest domestic FWDs.

I do Remember Hearing that.   It would have been Quite a few Years.. 1976 before the 1981 GM X Body Citation Platform hit the streets.

Those Pacers had a lot of innovation going on that was a bit ahead of it's time.  Think about the average Full size Chevy / Ford Dodge Barges still mulling about when it came out.

I realize that AMC lacked development dollars so their cars were usually "variations on a theme" like how the Gremlin is a "shorty" Hornet.  I always thought that the Pacer was just a re-body or body update of The Gremlin or a variation on the Hornet theme.  

This video implies that it was a mega-investment for AMC toward a clean slate design.

It was clean sheet. GM killing the drive train probably bankrupt AMC over it.

Think about how different it would have been if AMC had that thing with 25-30 mpg in 76 while everyone else only had land yachts.

As we talk about this AM Van, combined with the Pacer's need to be revolutionary and save the company. Just imagine a less wide front door, maybe a little more wheel base (but not much, if any) and a third row of seats.  Put in a sliding side door and the minivan could have been launched 10 years earlier than Chrysler.  Even better if the Pacer would have met its fwd goal.  

Then, build the machine for both passengers and cargo configs for both 2wd and 4wd.  That would have been a winner...maybe.
