No one mentioned the awesome temperatures we live through. Normal daytime highs in the 0 to -10 range and when the real cold comes down from the arctic -20 to -30 with wind chills in the -50s or more. Not worrying about rust when hoping the car/truck starts and the heater at least warms the interior so you don't see your breath. The upside: I only used house A/C less than 10 days last summer.
This is the reason I like to use new, disposable cars as the 'winter beater'. Fancy awd, stability, and ABS are amazing things. Remote start, with heated seats and steering wheel for those crispy -20°F mornings. Why you'd want an actual winter beater is beyond me. Anyways I drive the same vehicle as every 3rd person does around here, WK Grand Cherokee. No worries when it rusts away in 10-15 years as it will be worth less than a NA Miata.

You have to be up north! WE see 90* summer days a lot and crazy highs in the high 90's to 100. Winter in the -20's. It's why batteries don't last here. Too cold for summer batteries, too hot for winter climate.
I moved. Quit that putting up up the fun summer stuff for 6+ months.... Just to freeze my ass off the other 6 months.... I'm down to only 1-2 months now of "bad" winter weather.
No thanks. I'll take my high taxes (we get what we pay for) and 350 days of sunshine in San Diego. I'll come visit you guys with your weather when I feel like it and come back home to 12 months of car racing, mountain biking, and camping.
I did have some rust around the windshield of my 25 year old GTI once. That took an afternoon of grinding and fiberglass to fix. Meh.

If I follow correctly you are a snowbird? If so, that is my goal when the time comes.
