2007 Sonata V6 auto, 72,000 miles, presents with no MIL but shows P0700 and P0708 on scan. Car runs, drives, and shifts fine. WebMD (well, Google) indicates possibly speed sensor, shift position switch, or both. Also showing pending code for "Very Small" evaporator leak. Literally said "Very Small" on the code reader. All status monitors complete (except maybe evaporator? I forget).

What's the prognosis? How hard should I lean on the seller? It's a solid car but not a creampuff otherwise.

Speed sensor codes may be an intermittent issue. Enough drive cycles without the issue presenting itself stores the code but turns the light off as it's not an active issue. Evap leak could be anything honestly. Check to see if hte gas cap is OE or not. In my years in the dealers I don't thing I saw a single aftermarket cap work worth a crap.

Did you drive it? If the range switch is truly fubar'd it'll shift funky. If not, then it's liekly been fixed and the codes not cleared. THe car is almost 10 years old, so I'd expect something to need tweaking. THese seem pretty easy.

Car drove fine, shifted smoothly, no issues while moving the lever. I just wondered if that was a $50 sensor I could ask a $500 discount for, or if it actually was a potential trans problem. Thanks.

700 is the generic code when the tcm has to ask the ecm to turn on the engine light. The 708 sets when the tcm receives more than one signal for more than 30 seconds. You can check the adjustment of the range switch easily. Shift to Neutral and the hole on the shift lever (on the trans) and the hole on the range switch should line up. If not loosen the two 10 mm bolts and move the range switch until they do. These range switches have always been sensitive to age and heat. After some time even when adjusted correctly they still can give a wrong signal. If you open on up it is a simple mechanical sweep type switch. Dirt and wear eventually take their toll.
