Yeah, that's the ultimate, long term plan!

Shockingly, the secure parking I have doesn't stop thieves/break-ins all the time. Fortunately, it's way better than it was in the last few years.

That's a great idea. I'm the only one out of my immediate friend group that tracks at all.

If you're ever at a NASA event, look for a black E46 M3 #256 and say hi.  I'll be at Sonoma next weekend. :)

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I've definitely decided to pause on getting a third car.

I spent time time processing it, and with additional paid parking, along with the other logistical issues, I'll be fine until I find another spot.

With that, I ordered a tow hook kit for my ST and look forward to taking that out on track. The Miata will still get used most of the time for that purpose, but if I feel like being lazy(I'll find something closer for storage soon), the ST will be there.

3rd car? I'm the last guy. I have 4 Series Rovers for crying out loud. Lol

You need a third car. And a truck. I would think  the logistics/car shuffle would be a little bit easier if you could tow one behind you.

To try and understand your situation, I have to ask: is there a physical limitation that prevents your wife from driving? Or is it more of a mental aversion?

If you live in a high crime area, if your wife had the ability to drive, I would view that as a safety factor in the event she needed to get somewhere quickly and you weren't there. If she learned to drive it sounds like it would open up some possibilities that would allow you guys to move somewhere safer, where you could incidentally have a place to park your cars.

In your current situation, I would not want the hassle of a 3rd car- especially having to pay for parking, having to commute 45 minutes away to get your 2nd car, having to pay for insurance and maintenance on a 3rd car, etc. I would take the money you would be spending on those things and start trying to figure out a way to buy a house if possible- which, I know interest rates are through the roof right now, so I'm not sure how feasible that is at the moment.

Before I would get a 3rd car, I would consider selling your NA Miata and replacing it with something that suits the same purpose (can be tracked) that has an immobilizer, like an NC or a Twin, if for no other reason than you could park it locally and access it without driving across town.

Naw, go straight to the forth car.  Skip the third car.

Never mind this.  You need a house.  With a big garage.

I will! I've been meaning to drive at a NASA event. I'll see if signups are still open.

Yeah. I'm looking at houses too. That's something that will hopefully happen in the near-ish future.

Also, she just doesn't want to drive. Never had a need to, so she never learned. I've had "you should really learn this life skill" convo many, many times with her. lol.

That's wild. I'm thinking about the last two downtown apartments I've lived, that had fancy parking either attached to the building or part of the building. I'm sure if someone was really determined they could.

But especially the one in downtown OKC in 2017, my '15 BRZ Limited (lowered, wheels, exhaust) was toward the very top of the parking structure. And they would have had to pass on many nicer, more expensive cars to not steal than mine. Lot of medical students and the like, I probably literally had the least valuable car there.

Yeah, I think it's mostly kids that really just don't care *at all*, so they are willing to take way more risks. There's still a ton of sideshows and such out here, so they'll do anything for clout.

I should have added this to the initial post. Because my wife doesn't drive, I'm limited to areas with a robust public transportation system. BART in particular. So that really limits where we can move to.

DART is a nicer and newer BART. I have lived in both places and ridden both systems. Dallas has a better light rail. DART takes you to the airport, downtown, shopping and most suburbs, and they are still expanding it. We also have cheaper rent, less crime, twice as many tracks in the area and no state income tax.

I still can't believe that you have to go all the way up to Willows or down to Crows Landing just to autocross. When I lived there I could do one event at Splinter City in Sacramento and another event in Pleasanton on the same day! Is every parking lot not out in the sticks too expensive to rent now? They also had the Oakland Coliseum, Candlestick Park, Stockton Fairgrounds and the yearly Sports Car Olympics at Boreal Ridge Ski Resort. I'm sure all of that is gone.

As a former RX-7 owner, an easy theft prevention device is wiring up a kill switch to the ignition circuit. This was sometimes done in rotary powered cars to clear engine flooding. (Same as pulling the EGI/ignition fuse) No thief has time to diagnose why a car won't start and who wants to steal a "broken" car.
