An engine stand is one of those tools that when you need it, its awesome. When you don't need it, it lives in pieces crammed under your tool box while big balls of German Shepherd hair accumulate in all its nooks and crannies (at least thats what happens at my house). I need to do some work to the front axle on my CJ5 and since the front end was already in pieces, I decided to just pull it out so I didn't have to lay down to work on it. I also like to keep things on wheels in the garage since space is a premium and it makes moving stuff around easier. So with a couple pieces of scrap metal, I converted the engine stand into an axle stand. This is just a Dana 30 so it isn't too heavy. If I was working on a Rockwell I might need something a little beefier. Im sure Im not the first person to do this, but its always nice when you can repurpose a tool.
You should patent the custom bits and sell a kit. You might be surprised how many people could use that.
Ya great alternative use of an item. It's like an engine hoist............you only need it occasionally, otherwise it's just in the way. Good job.
I made a bracket that bolts to the transaxle of my race car and welded a piece of round tubing that slips into my engine stand. I was able to rotate the trans and work on it from all side. Win!
while we are talking about alternative uses for engine stands...
apparently engine hoists are great for removing shrubbery

Here's my strangest use of a hoist... loading a sewer snake.

The Knights Who Say "Ni!" A highlight of my teen years.
My brother did much the same, using it to pull up huge tree roots, then left it out overnight so that it's now coated with rust...
