Funny that this topic popped up today. I came across a guy in an NA with a full size canoe sitting in the passenger area straight up into the air. He was holding onto it while driving. I was too late to snap a pic, would have been GRM worthy!

One of my neighbors has a Mitsubishi Eclipse convertible. It drove past my house today with a load of lumber sticking up from the back seat.

I suspect it's as much about the spectacle as actually transporting the bike. A trailer doesn't put on as much of a show. I like it. (But would not be able to put a bike up there, wow, that's scary looking.)
