Attended a HPDE/Solo 1 kind of a thing yesterday and there was some bad ass Corvettes there. It seemed like the weapon of choice was the early to mid 2000ish ZO6. So naturally when I got home I checked some used car sites and they are actually fairly reasonable. I even prefer the notchback look to the fastback. Damn it, I don't need something else to think about, I already have enough!!

The C5 ZO6 is currently the best speed/dollar on the used market.

Yep, hard to beat the C5Z... it's made a believer out of a LOT of people.

It's not even a question. The things are phenomenal.

There's one on Auto Trader in Fort Lauderdale with a supercharger and meth injection for $15,500. Sounds like fun.

I'm a HUGE fan, looking for a reasonable C5 right now.

Honestly, I never really thought about them much...........always seemed a bit big or something, but since yesterday I can't stop thinking about the ZO6s. They were just so wicked and purposeful, and sounded awesome......... like the perfect track car.

Danny Popp. Google him. There's a rather complete write up on him and his Z in the June 2004 issue (10 years ago I know...so shoot me). Interesting trick he did was to swap the wheels / tires front to back. It worked well.

Easily the best purchase I've ever made.

You can live with them as a DD, insurance and running costs are cheap. Go for it!

I had this conversation less than 24 hours ago, after scaring the E36 M3 out of a stranger in the V. "Man, if you don't need 4 seats...."

I don't want one. I'm not sure why. They ARE THEE performance bargain of the century so far. They are fairly bullet proof.

Still... Buying one is like being a fan of the NY Yankees or Dallas Cowboys. Even when the team is actually really great... everyone on that bandwagon is an shiny happy person. berkeley the Yankees. berkeley the Cowboys and berkeley the Corvette. Back an underdog fer chrissakes.

And get off my berkeleying lawn.

THEE, not THREE.

But the 1st gen Viper and the E46 M3 are right there in the sweet spot.

We should just have a continuous c5 z06 deals we found thread. I'm thinking about either a Elise, C5, or C5 z06 is in my future but they are hard to find for sale.

I have always been more of an Elise guy than a Corvette guy too but the ZO6s were just hammering the living hell out of everything else that was out there. It's hard not to respect that. Some were set up so nice. Damn.

And......................I stand by my notchback preference.

I feel the same way, and I have several hangups about it that keep me from purchasing one right now.

  1. They are mostly driven by balding old men taking their wives to Sunday brunch (Corvettes in general, not just Z06's)

  2. Everyone knows that they are fast. There are no base models to disguise to the commoners that it may be a performance model, such as the Mustangs or Camaros.

  3. Driving one puts you at risk of looking like you have serious self-esteem issues. The Miata is so far on the other side of the bar when it comes to not looking like a showoff that it makes it hard to switch over. You might get the gay hairdresser comments with the Miata, but nobody will think you're trying to compensate for anything.

In short, I'm more afraid of the Corvette's sterotypes than the Miata's. Weird, I know. Performance-wise, it makes absolute sense.

Throwing personal opinion out the window, the only reason I can see to go Elise vs. Corvette is that with a 'Vette you are paying an annuity to TireRack.

The reason is that one choice is completely different and sharper/crisper in every important driving dynamic except one. The other is a Corvette.

And while you're wildly entertained and self-satisfied in your proper-driver's-car Elise, less capable drivers in the Z06 will be passing you in every straight and hanging in the corners. Try not to let any of their self-esteem issues rub off on the way by.

I'll take either one.
