So we've been not making any progress on our 302 RX7 LeMons car, other than acquiring parts. Craigslist is tempting me with someone else's 81 Datsun B210 V8 swap project. I don't know anything about the underpinnings of these cars and what donor cars offer worthy upgrades. Our must have list is 5 on 4.5 wheels, good brakes, and good handling. How similar is the front end on these to the Z cars?

A 210/B310? The front end is very, very similar to the 70s Z cars. I think quite a few parts swap across. The rear axle looks pretty skinny and I can't imagine it would take V8 power but that is merely a guess.

The rear end would be easy to swap to some other stick axle. The front, I think, is similar to the 280 ZX.

I just happened to have built a '79 Datsun 210 for LeMons glory. Front struts from a 280ZX (must be a S130 car) bolt right on, just reuse the 210 steering arms. If you want 5x4.5, you can swap Z31 struts, use the 210 steering arms, and lengthen the control arm 25-30mm and the tension rod accordingly to make the wheelbase return back to normal. I don't remember that measurement off the top of my head.

The rear axle is weak at best. We roached ours at our first race due to a bad axle seal. Who would have guessed that a 210 with maybe 30 hp would be enough to kill an axle?

What V8 do you have in mind?

Oh, and do it.

Lastly, they look good with Jeep Cherokee fender flares, as seen above.
