Any comments about R32's would be appreciated. My dad is wanting to get one, partly because I had 3 great 85-87 GTI's. I am wondering about maitenance/reliability specifically.

They are cool, but scary as a everyday trans. They are meant to be used at WOT, so during stop and go traffic, it slams itself in and out of 1st and second. Just like my co-worker says "If i had the choice between walking and driving a DSG, I'd choose walking..."
Maintenance wise they are fairly intensive (compared to a Manual or Standard Auto). They need a Filter and flush ever 40K. Through the dealer it's about a $600-800 job. Also they are VERY expensive to replace. Figure 4-5K if they need replaced. Failure rates are apparently low, however the computer/hydrualic unit seems to have some issues on a small percentage of transmissions. My GTI had one and it was a great everyday trans. It didn't seem to be any different, except it was a little "grabby" from a stop. Meaning the car takes off like a manual, the engine revs a bit and then takes off. The R32 seems like a great vehicle, however I would look strongly at WRX wagons or a new STI if you need an AWD hot hatch.
second the STI recommendation, although they are surprisingly "truckish"; the VW is going to feel a lot more refined.
riding along in a DSG GTI, I was underwhelmed in stop-and-go traffic. very "lurchy" from rest; a bit like riding with someone who had just learned to drive stick.
Maintenence kits have reached the DIY market. http://www.idparts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=941 (among other sources).
