In reply to Gasoline:

When did you try to give away the Spitfire? I must of missed that or I would have been in Atlanta right then. I could use a parts car for my Spitfire project.

I used to braze up the rust spot on AC Beetles. rinse with water, then with the cap and gauge sender off/out. stand back and put the torch in the opening. Usually got a little puff. Then proceeded with the repair.

Run exhaust gas into the filler neck. Trick learned from a fella called "Pappy Huff", who was a legend in Paterson, NJ's Gasoline Alley working on stock cars and midgets in the 50's-70's.

The wife unit is an ICU nurse. She seems to get at least one customer a year who could give you good advice on this topic.

The same advice will apply to those that are thinking of cutting the lids off of 55 gallon drums.

PLEASE proceed with caution and if you do, wear a face shield. Maybe consider wearing your helmet and nomex?

Similar but different.

Water doesn't bind to the petrochemical residue in a tank.

Water + some Dawn dish soap does.

So, hot water and dawn. Agitate. Drain. Let dry. Sniff test.

It can't hurt to purge w/ shielding gas either.

Last one I did, emptied it out, blew out with compressed air, set it in the sun and let it 'bake' for abut a week till no smell. Everything went fine.

Small scale version of when it does NOT go fine:
