This is my tale. My 95 Miata failed last week. It started popping and stuttering while driving and quit running. I left it on the shoulder and continued to work. 9 hours later it fires up and runs for about 30 seconds and repeats the morning performance. I install an extra coil and the same thing happens. Both coil sets check out using the procedure in the service manual. It seems to advance the timing until it will not run. I have ordered a cam position sensor. We pulled the valve cover andchecked the timing belt. What else should I check?
Thank you, Braden
Pull the codes and see if the car tells you anything. All you need is a paper clip and the ability to count.

Thank you Keith. I will do that this afternoon. I have read that post and I have one question. Is it necessary to warm up the car? I can only get it to run for about 30 seconds. Then it is a while before it wil start again.
The car doesn't even need to be running to check the codes, they're stored. You just need to have the ignition on.
Beautiful, Thanks again for the help.
It was the cam position sensor. The test that Keith suggested confirmed it
