Damn, lots of fans here as expected. It will be sometime next year when I start shopping. I still have to get my XJR from California then sell/trade it.

Honestly I don't want a running project, hopping to get a clean one. Looking to budget up to maybe $7,500. It'll have to compete for my want for a w140 s600 or and Cotton's bi-turbo s600 cheeky

If I were to build an E28 for a DD it would be an M20 car with a S52 swap.  The M30 is just too inefficient for my liking.

I briefly owned an E28 535is a bunch of years ago. Used it for one season as a winter beater when I was living in Canada. Between the narrow tires, studded snows, and LSD it did a great job.

They’re fun cars to drive. Love the ergonomics. My issues with the car had to do with sloppy steering from a worn recirculating-ball steering box, rust, and (it turns out) a cracked head. Fuel economy basically sucks. You definitely feel the weight, too. I remember lots of wind, tire, and engine noise as well. Wheel wells were tiny, which limits tire choice pretty dramatically.

Overall, it’s a fun platform ... but kind of falls into the category of “neither fish or fowl” for me: not really a sports car; not really a family hauler. A little too rough around the edges to make a comfortable cruiser.

If I could find any decent examples for $3.5 to $5k then I might consider one again. Realistically, for what they cost now, they don’t make much sense IMNHSO. If I’m looking for a cool, blocky, 30-year-old, mid-sized, German sedan with a big-six engine ... a regular 300E pretty much covers the same ground at a small fraction of the price. And I won’t have to swap bumpers and headlights the second I get it home LOL

You'll be swapping those USDM w124 headlights. Some of the ugliest mercedes headlights ever!

True. But brand new Euro headlights (made by Depo) are just $125 a pair shipped and PayPal'ed from a supplier in California. No big deal

You guys are always enablers. Luckily I don't have money due to the holidays, or I'd be driving a few blocks from home to look at this:

Yeah, so mine is currently parked till I look at an undiagnosed issue, and also get the suspension rebuilt. I've been putting off suspension for 4 years now, and it's finally bad enough I am going to do it. I did find one fairly close that was backed into on the front end, but apparently has CA tuned coilovers. May try to pick that up to pilfer Manual swap and suspension parts.

I have run an e28 for about 3 years.  Achilles heel from a motorsport standpoint is the recirculating ball steering and extremely long gearing.  Gearing can be fixed with a 3.64 or 3.73 diff but the steering is hard.  I ended up road tripping and rallycrossing my car up and down the east coast with minimal problems.  The biggest complaint I had for highway driving is that a r134 converted AC system doesn't really keep up over 90 degrees.  It was a big enough deal for Florida that I have moved on to something a little less cool on the outside but considerably colder on the inside.

My road trip page is on Mye28 and the car is currently for sale if you are interested.

The E28 is another one of those cars that I never liked when they were new but, damn, I would love to own one today.
