What car would you be looking at? My Nissan is about to give up the ghost and that's what I use to get around, real short trips and no long commute luckily.

What kind of nissan do you have and how do you feel about it?

What kind of traits are important to you?

If you don't give more info then you will get stuff like this: The lady and i just bought an 07 Prius for $4500. It's averaging 45-46 mpg they are extremely reliable so it should be a great car for your short commute because it comes in under budget, saves money on gas, and is unlikely to hit you with big repair bills. Now you dont want a Prius (...do you?) so you have to give us some more info so we can come up with something more entertaining to tell you.

I'll certainly give more info! I like my Nissan about as much as anyone's first car, bought it for $4,000 first year of college. It's given me a lot of problems, so I probably wouldn't buy another Nissan. Lets see.. I've restored a Nova before so I sort of have a soft spot for something with some power, same side though I don't like low riding cars so MIatas and stuff like that are out of the question. I like something that I feel safe in, like if I hit or got hit I would be A OK. There is something to be said for a reliable four door car like a pruis with good mpg. I don't drive much though now adays actually.

I don't think you can find really good E46s for 6k, plus you have to deal with maintenance. I would recommend an accord

What I bought was a Jetta TDI but with a short commute you don't need this as much

2007 Mazda 6 would fit the bill.

I paid that for my Land Rover.. most of my cars I paid WAY less. My Volvo was 1200 and all it needed the entire time I had it was tyres

Hmm. You like Nova's (V8?), don't like low cars (higher ground clearance is better?), want to feel safe (big?), don't drive much (all short trips anyway), and want reliability?

There is only one answer young Padawan...

For 6K you can get a 1st gen Honda Insight that should have it's IMA battery recently replaced. You'd have to fill up at least once every 2 months.

I have given this a very very serious consideration. As of matter of fact I have always wanted a crown vic or impala. Don't know what bodied car like this is best and what year.

Well then! 03+ is what you want. They have a new frame with a rack & pinion steering setup, better suspension, better brakes, and share an offset with the 05+ Mustang so cooler wheels are easy & cheap. The actual P71 (and that's in the VIN itself) has a HD suspension that actually sits higher than a civvie car (for curb-jumping). They also have the armor kit on the gas tank and rear end to survive 70+ MPH rear-end collisions.

Go watch the video of the P71 in the DC chase from last week to see how much damage these things can take, it's insane.

It's settled then. So anything past '03 and I'll be good.. Will try to get a black one for a marauder mini look.

I just picked up a BMW 635 for a lot less than half of your $6K. Pretty much everything else has been parked since.

Big enough, reasonable power, great ride, fair handling, and most important of all, comfortable.

$6K should open up all kinds of interesting possibilities.

My brother-in-law just bought a super clean 2003 Mercury Marquis (Crown Vic) with around 50-60K for $5,200 including snow tires. I drove it, it's nice. Thinking about getting one to replace my Civic coupe since my son will be due soon.

This thread is going great! The OP is surprisingly receptive to suggestions!

I hope we see a nice 03-up P71 in Coldsnap's hands in the near future.. That blue color is kinda purdy in certain light too..

Now to research what fun modifications I can do with it. Glad to see it shares an offset with the mustang.

I am still open to suggestions, although this seems to fit what I want/like perfectly.
