That's a tough choice, but after giving it some thought, I'd go RWD/Auto over FWD/Manual. Even on older cars with non-electronic autos, I've been able to develop a kind of synergy with the transmission, and we worked well together. Newer autos, with electronic controls, either come with or can be GRM-hacked to provide some element of manual control, improving the situation even more.
I guess it comes down to this: I love shifting; but I love oversteer more!
FWD manual...some of them have a very nice handing balance, ahem
RWD Auto....then a conversion down the road.

+1
Its whats going to happen to my Volvo 945t.
FWD Stick Hatch. If you live in an area with snow etc., FWD is wicked better than RWD.

Really depends what "weekend fun" means.
As I favor handling over horsepower (although both is best), I'd have to go FWD/manual.

That really, really depends on the car. I've had both and I can honestly say I enjoy the RWD/auto more, and it's the first auto I've really driven a lot.
4 cyl verses 4cyl on both, I would take the front wheel stick.
I would take a manual GTI or CRX over the automatic '97 240sx that I owned for 5 years. Though the auto 240sx made for a nice highway touring car it was a heavy, slow beast.
To me, my 240sx was just the Asian equivilent to a V6 Mustang. It had a sporty apearence but really was not that sporty out of the box. It just happened to be related to a car that could be fast. It served me well but all I wanted from it was comuting. I must say, it was bullet proof and returned me 100k miles with no needs or wants. To me it was a poor man's Lexus 300 coupe.
If you start talking automatics with huge V8's attached then the argument could change but also the core purpose of the car and price limitations can really take effect. The V8 will often be a "straight line" car and if it can take corners, it often has a high price tag to get that job done.
No question, RWD auto, I love to drive slideways

fwd manual... i enjoyed my s2 probe gt quite a bit, maybe to much... id get another with out hesitation...
depends on the cars in question.
I'd prefer a manual. It is harder to modulate power with an auto.

Easy, 2. even if 1 was a manual. If I only had one car I like a fwd for the snow and ice.
I was anti FWD for the longest time.Till my '91 SE-R came along one of the funnest cars I have ever drove. so FWD/Manual for me.
FWD Manual. I hate automatics.

yup! The Aurora is the only fwd that somewhat feels rwd. that's why I have it
Rear drive, auto, there are some very capable automatic rear drive cars out there . . . Maserati anyone?

FWD manual Hatch GTI, civic SI then park a big sway bar out on the rear axle and you are the next Sebastian Loeb looking out your front side windows to figure out where your going!

My Civics are plenty fun.
Hatchbacks are practical and fun.
