Okay, strap in. This is a long one!

I currently don't have a garage. Well, I have a garage that's about an hour away at my old place in Chicago. It's a pain to get there and I have no bathroom access there and the space isn't very nice to work in. I use it for tool and race tire storage, mostly, and occasionally we'll park in there if we have a hankering for brunch in our old neighborhood. Anyway, the point of saying this is that I don't have a place where I can work on my cars myself for anything complicated or time-consuming. Anything longer than a brake job, say, is probably not super do-able. (I did actually replace the trans mount in the Saab in the sucky far-away garage and on the way down there I hit a pothole the size of a moon crater and destroyed one of the wheels. This setup sucks but until Mrs. Lugnut finishes grad school, this is what I'm working with.)

My 997 is in for an engine rebuild. It's not IMS-related. The #1 or #3 rod bearing flipped and shoved the piston into the valvetrain. It had 4 seats.

The Saab ('00 Viggen convertible) is old and rare and mostly worthless. I got an emissions notice for it the same day the CEL came on for a small evap system leak. It also needs the other two engine mounts replaced. There's also a bit of a front-wheel wobble. And the top leaks. But it has four seats.

The Corvette is a two-seater. I bought this car in April and I was totally fine with it being a two-seater because the other 3/4 of the fleet all had back seats. I already have enough money into this car between track stuff and maintenance/repair work that I am not ready to let it go yet. We're looking at adding something, not replacing this one.

So, here's the What Car question. I need a car that's entertaining to drive, that may occasionally see HPDE duty, that can fit two adults and my 10yo daughter. She doesn't need a ton of room. She doesn't need her own doors or windows. She doesn't get motion sick (soooo jealous) and she fits comfortably in the back of the 911. That's an indication of what kind of space we need.

The car needs to be pleasant to drive. The Saab has shakes and wobbles and clunks and leaks when it's raining. I don't want any of that. I want something nice and pleasant and entertaining to drive.

The car needs to be pretty solid, mechanically. I won't have the ability to work on it. Not for anything big, anyway. So I'll need something with reasonable maintenance costs, and whose costs won't drastically exceed the value of the car.

Let's say $7,500 or less in Chicago dollars. I know that you guys find ZL1s for 6k in Atlanta or wherever you guys find these things, but I'm staying in Chicago and my car is coming from Chicago. Unless I can get eyes on a far-away car and a PPI enough to trust a fly-and-drive, I'm staying local.

There must be dual front airbags at the minimum, and preferably more. In the age of humungo SUVs and drivers on cell phones, Mrs. Lugnut is not enthused about being a regular passenger in a car without modern safety equipment. And I don't want to be putting my daughter in that spot, either.

My last criteria, and here's the gotcha. The yeah-but generator. I have a big "been-there, done-that" feeling lately. I mean, I'm 200+ cars into my car ownership career and I kinda have been there and done that. There isn't much left in the car world that excites me, at least, not at my budget level.

So, here's what I'm considering:

A series 1 RX-8. I've wanted one of these since they came out but I've never had one. This satisfies most of the criteria. They're engaging and fun to drive. They're pleasant to be in. The seating is adequate. Safety is adequate. But they're needy and I don't know if I can properly care for one.

A Neon SRT-4. Ditto. I would prefer a Mazdaspeed 3 but they're too expensive around here.

A 1st gen Audi TT. I think they're gorgeous and I've had fun every time I've driven one, but can I even have a turn of the century VAG vehicle if I can't work on it myself? That seems potentially very expensive.

A 944 Turbo. It's no secret that I'm a Porsche enthusiast. Getting it sorted could be expensive, but once they're in shape, they're super solid. I've had every derivation of front-engined Porsche coupe except for a 951 and I do love them a lot. They do have dual airbags but they're old technology.

A Mazdaspeed 6. I've never actually driven one, but the idea of one is appealing.

A Mercedes E500, wagon if I can find one. This would be a delight. They're great. Solid. More fun than you'd expect. And mostly invisible, which is a plus.

I'm not interested in BMW 3s (I've had a bunch), G35s (yuck), Honda Civics (I just don't enjoy them), old Mustangs or old F-bodies (they don't meet the pleasant to drive criteria). Pretty much everything else I can think of, either I've already had it, or it's going to be too expensive. But I figured I'd open it up to you because you always can always surprise me!

tl;dr - 3+ seats, <$8k, needing minimal work at worst, motorsport-capable. Go!

Lexus IS300?

Hmm. I haven't had an IS300. But I did really super enjoy my LS400, so I'm definitely not anti-Lexus. And I do really like the look of the wagon ones. Okay, I'll add that to the search list. The manuals on CL right now are less than ideal. There's a cool looking yellow auto in Kenosha. Solid suggestion :)

You're obviously into German cars, so this probably won't stick, but...

What about an 05-06 Mustang? $7500 should get you a nice V6 or a worn V8 model. Back seat is no worse than a 911. Reliable as an anvil, nice to drive day to day if not modded out, can HDPE with minimal prep although tire and brake wear is faster than lighter cars.

Last generation Celica GTS? Alternatively, would an Acura RSX Type S be different enough from a Civic to merit a look?

EDIT: Here's an RSX Type S: Chicago CL

For $7500 and not wanting to work on it I'd stay away from most anything European. I see an Acura in your future. There's a TSX, CL, TL, and a couple of RSXs on the Chicago craigslist. A WRX, too. 370Z. A few F-bodies.

Where are you now, out of curiosity?

In any case, BMW, IS300 (although it will be slim-pickens) and TSX would be my picks.

Where am I now as in my location? Highland Park. I live about 5 minutes away from The Porsche Exchange, if that helps locationally. :)

Okay, my thoughts:

Mustang V6. Eh. I will need some persuading on this before I get to luke-warm.

IS300. Pickings are, indeed, slim. But I don't mind an auto if it's a good auto. I kinda really like that yellow one. https://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/6194302240.html

TSX. Barf! I had a friend with one and I drove it a couple times and I hated every single second of it. Ditto the CL and TL. I can't stand driving them. It's been a long time, so I don't remember exactly what it is about them, but I recall very strongly how all I wanted to do was hand over the wheel, and that's not something that happens to me, like, ever.

370Z isn't a 2+2.

WRX, I've had. I suppose I would do another one. That includes Imprezas or 9-2xs.

Celica GTS could be fun. I kinda forgot about those. And that's exactly what I was going for by asking! I once dated a girl with an auto GT and I even enjoyed driving that. A manual GTS would be fun.

You can get by without a garage to address the neediness of an RX-8. This gets my vote. Really fun to drive!

You have a list of interesting cars that are mostly all terrible choices for someone with no access to a garage.

944 Turbo + no place to work on it? You'll be on a first name basis with the local Uber & Lyft drivers. Seems not to fit the safety criteria.

Audi TT same as above but with better safety

Mercedes E500 Older $65k German car seems like a recipe for high maint. $$

RX-8 Interesting to drive. You might get lucky on reliability. You might not.

Neon SRT-4 Is it possible to find one of these that hasn't had the snot beaten out of if?

Speed 6 Here's your logical choice. Not sure if interesting enough to drive tho...

EDIT: If it were me, I'd go 944 Turbo and a cheap appliance (2000 Mazda Protege or similar) to drive while you wait for parts... wait, no garage! nevermind. Speed 6! You want a Speed 6.

Can you get an appliance and use the Vette for HPDE events? My experience is that fun vehicles in the $7,500 and under category usually require regular fixes/maintenance that would be prohibitively expensive if done at a dealer, and not easy to DIY without a garage.

I'm using the Vette for track stuff while the 911 is away.

I swear, this particular 911 has broken more than all of my other Porsches (and that's a lot of them) put together.

I dunno. I really only need to worry about it until the 911 is back and that should be end of July by the latest. I think.

I could fix the Viggen but I think I might be tired of it. Then again, it's the four-seated that I already have, isn't it?

Maybe I should get rid of the Viggen, too, and increase my budget a little.

I'm going to drop these here:

E38 #1

E38 #2

Buying a well maintained '01 short Sport can net you many years of trouble free driving. I should know.

E38 #3

This one is a bunch cheaper, leaving room in the budget of preventative maintenance, though I usually say spend a bit more up front to spend much less later...

These are much nicer to drive than the 3s or 5s. And if you're looking at a Mercedes, it's good to check them out. There's a huge community around them.

They are truly ridiculous cars. At 5000 lbs they aren't something for track days but I don't think I'd rather be anywhere else in a big accident. And they give a sense of......authority to your drive. Like a crown vic on steroids.

Don't think it was a SWB Sport model, or in all that good a shape overall. The base cars are pretty decent, but nothing like a well maintained SWB Sport.

I second the Celica. Back in the day I raced a Showroom Stock C Celica GT a few times. Best fwd car I've ever had on track. I'd put it above my R56 S in terms of overall handling. It's one of the few fwd cars I've driven that was easy to rotate on throttle. Just a joy to drive at the limit. I wouldn't rule out a good GT just because its not a GTS.

The GTS cars do still have the oiling issues you would need to address for track work however, usually an accusump works.
