For everything you want out of a car, though expensive, I think you'll be very happy with a TDI sportwagen.
Oh and as far as the HPFP is concerned, I don't think the later models have been near as cursed with that. I use an additive every fill up just in case.

Now that you've thrown it out there, i like the CX-5 a lot. But only really in 2.0/5spd guise.

Given all my blathering, I'm hesitant to post 'til something's in the driveway, but we just met up at lunch and pondered parking spaces, dollars, ecology, rental cars, spiffiness, je ne sais quoi, and MGBs, and I believe we've returned to Plan Leaf, with a specific plan to try just doing that and renting cars for road trips, with the observation that if it drives us mental, I can go get a Volvo wagon or something any old time, but we don't need to start with that extra parking requirement, maintenance, etc... The Leaf might be all we need, and if it turns out not to be, we can work from there.
All the dithering you're going through was exactly what I went through, pondering Leaf vs current daily vs something else. I went with the Leaf, and I already have the Volvo wagon as backup. I am quite happy with the decision so far, and have not had any range anxiety in my 500 miles of driving.
We shall see how winter goes, however.
I wish I could afford a Tesla Model S
I actually park next to a model S at work. I asked my wife if I could get one but she said no. Sad face.

I'll write more later (probably in a fresh thread), but there is a blue Leaf SL in our driveway, on the trickle charger.
I think we're gonna need a group Leaf owners thread.
