I've had good luck bringing the trailer in the past. It seems to add a sense of immediacy to the transaction and I know that it has helped me get the price down on a couple of occasions.
It can also be very effective when a seller won't come down and sees that you're willing to drive home with an empty trailer. It doesn't always work, but I have been called back from the truck a time or two.

As a seller, having a buyer come from long distance typically means I'm not going to budge on my asking price. Then again I represent the stuff I sell accurately, and I've never sold a car that needed to be trailered away.

well if I'm on my own, or haven't been able to secure ins prior to the purchase, it doesn't matter how perfect your vehicle is … I'm still going to have to trailer it ……..
I always bring a trailer. Over the years it really has not seemed to make a difference. I also usually don't haggle over prices. Things that are mis re-presented I usually walk. If the seller sais it is rust free and the rockers are gone what about that just broken in engine? I just don't want to deal with people like that.

I feel your pain. I can't even estimate the time I've wasted going to look at total crap that has been deliberately misrepresented.

Next to develop: a BAT app that points out vehicles along your route home. We'll call it "Last Call".
I always bring cash and the trailer. I'm not a big haggler. I try to do most of the haggling in advance to see if the guy is a dreamer or not. My biggest reasons for bringing cash and the trailer aren't to make the deal better, just to save me a 2nd trip because I'm lazy. I like to get there, make the deal, load up, and go home.
I love the trip to look at a car: Even though I know 9 out of 10 cars are much much worse than described, on the trip there it's like I'm looking at the bargain of the century and the anticipation is fun, especially if someone comes along and we bench race the whole time. Then there is that moment, usually as we're pulling up in the drive, where we realize it's not really worth getting out to look. But we do anyway, and politely walk away after a quick conversation. And then we do a different type of bench racing on the way home. The BAT app would make the ride home better.

BAT app! What a great idea.
