I'm thinking of unloading the Miata and getting an S2000.
I found this one. Seems to be a good deal given the year and mileage. Around here this car would go for around 16k. What do you guys think?

I don't have a garage to park the car in... worth investing in a car cover if I do buy?
I'd be flying out to get it since I'm located in Utah...
an S2000 parked on the streets in L.A.? I'm sure some gentlemen will be along shortly to relieve you of your seats and steering wheel.

My work blocks Craigslist
Ah wait, you're saying me street parking it will get that stuff stolen. Haha, well, I do have a place I can park it behind the house, its just not covered. But I've heard stolen seats isnt exactly an uncommon thing with these cars...
So common in fact, that you can buy special locking bolts for your seats. Also the antenna WILL be stolen, my brother ended who owned one ended up keeping 3 on hand for the times when it would be relieved of it's antenna.
My understanding is that you are getting off lucky if they only slash your top and steal the seats. They are absolutely ridiculous theft magnets. Phenomenal car that is unfortunately also very desirable to chop shops and thieves.
That said, they are very high on my list of "possible next fun cars." I'm just not sure how far the thought will go because I'd be afraid to park it on the street when I go to work, and I don't want a fun car I have to be paranoid about...
Damn, that's as clean an AP2 as you're likely to find for 13 grand. If that aren't on the complete opposite side of the country I would be seriously contemplating calling my CU right now.
I LOOOVE me some S2k. My dad had an '04 in Silverstone Metallic pretty much the entire time I was in high school. Pretty much his midlife crisis car and, until last year, the only car he had ever bought brand new. Had to be one of the cleanest S2000s in the country at the time he sold it with like 36k mi. - had every maintenance receipt, and even every last gallon of fuel put in it, on record, lived literally it's entire life inside (parked in a garage at both work and home), not one single ding scratch or dent, saw VTEC maybe a dozen times in its life... The handling is fantastic, engine revs for days, the shifter is absolutely divine, build quality supurb (did you know it was the cheapest hand built car available at the time?) IMHO, the best pure sports car of the modern era, bar none. Yes, that even includes the Miata.
Feel sufficiently enabled yet?

As an owner of a S2000, I say go for it. Mine has been flawless and I smile every time I drive it.
That does look like a good deal, but if you get it you do need to make arrangements for covered storage and security. The S2k top is vinyl, not fabric, and more subject to sun damage. I have an AP1 and i really enjoy driving it, so I'm not going to discourage you from getting one as well.
Ooo. That's a really nice asking price. Red is not for me, but everything else about it is good.
There's a wrecked S2000 sitting out front and center at a used car dealer on my commute, not listed on their website, been there a few weeks now. I go through too late in the evening and too early in the morning to stop and talk to anybody. Right side damages w/ wheels askew, obviously will need a chassis pull. Maybe it's just bait or hasn't reached offers. Is this a pretty stout chassis? Maybe oughta call.

Do it, they are in rare company of cars that are absolute bliss to drive.
They are truly fantastic cars.
The top will irritate you after owning a Miata though.

I vote for the s2k. I just replaced mine with a 911 and I still think about the car and how good it was.

The electric top only takes about 6-7 seconds to go up or down. It uses window motors rather than fancy hydraulics so easier to repair than most other powered tops. My wife's BMW 330ci has a hydraulic pump, 2 hydraulic cylinders, 2 electric motors, angle sensors, proximity switches, a stand-alone controller, and a finicky harness that likes to break.
Yeah, I am really thinking about it. If I buy at this price, it will probably hold its value pretty well. I just dont have access to covered parking. Would one of those car covers be sufficient do you think?

Yeah, I get that. It may be simple compared to a 330ci, but its a whole lot more complex than the Miata. Miata top is significantly cheaper to repair, and easier to use in my opinion.
I bought an AP1, did some maintenance while driving for a year, and sold it for a few hundred bucks over my original purchase price. Seems like they have gone even higher since then, so don't think you can go wrong.I would say if you are letting it sit for extended periods of time a cover might make sense, but if it would get driven daily probably not worth the effort.
On my list too...the AP1 I drove is the only stock car I've driven that is as fun to drive as my modified E30. I would get one in a heartbeat if the E30 and S2k wouldn't have identical roles as 'the fun car' in my life.

You're getting off really lucky if they only slash your top and steal your seats, and the insurance company doesn't total it in response. Ask my never-wrecked,salvage-titled GPW/Tan AP2 about that one. Seats alone are something like $8200 for parts from Honda.
That being said, I don't care. I bought this car 8 years ago as a dumb college grad knowing I would keep it until I wasn't able to anymore. Just finished putting upgraded motor mounts in it last night, second convertible top, and a new clutch/lightweight flywheel are going in tonight. I would highly recommend buying and loving any S2000 that looked as if it had never been stanced.
Yep, have a friend with an AP2 S2000 here in CT who had the seats stolen. Was parked in the lot at his condo complex when it happened.

This sounds like a problem for Future Desmond. Present Desmond's only concern should be buying himself a plane ticket to LA and arranging payment for that car.
I'd go for a Boxster S for the same money.
