I used to frequently converse with a Dutch guy from the MCM forum that played with Citroen AXs. He had a diesel as a daily and a 16v as a track toy. I think both have seen a few laps around the Nurburgring.

In car rally videos on the other hand...
What do you do when you have lost 2nd and 3rd gears?
What I really like about this video, besides the sound of a BDA hitting about 12k in first gear, is how utterly smooth he is. Almost zero bobbles anywhere, the car goes exactly where he'd aimed it before the corner entry.

That's a really cool video. And, just to say it again, rally guys are berkeleying insane, and have otherwordly talent.
I just came back from Germany and wrote about my experience. Did a rental Suzuki Swift from Rent4Ring and had not done a lot of practice laps on Forza or anything. It was a riot, not that scary, and made me want to go back for a full track day or weekend.

Without even clicking, Lap1 and Lap2...
Remember the days when that video was passed from friend to friend on increasingly poor VHS copies along with Rendezvous? I must have seen it hundreds of times.
Driving the ring is a blast. I did a few laps in my Volvo C30 four days after picking it up from the factory, you know, just to break it in. The first lap was four up with the family. Then the wife and eldest got out, the youngest stayed in and I got a local ring rat to ride with me. Wow. If you can find someone who knows the track it's awesome. I drove so much faster, but it was so much easier and safer with someone who could tell me what was coming up round the next corner. I used the brakes less and carried far more speed while feeling far more in control. After that lap the youngest got out. My wife asked her how it was, as she'd loved the first lap. 'It was jerky and daddy said bad words'!! I then went back out for another two laps without the consideration of a 7 year old being in the car. I had a blast. A bucket list item that lived up to expectations. But as I say, find someone who knows the track and knows the other ring rats, it really helps. I wrote about my experience here. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/off-topic-discussion/any-c30-owners-here/47509/page1/

Citroen AX Diesel breaking 10 minutes BTG
Masterclass in conservation of momentum. It hurts to see him having to downshift in some of the uphill sections.
Similarly there's Dale Lomas' "Club1000" effort for non-turbo 999cc and under cars. one example of which is here:

Latvala used to be on Ford's WRT, as #2 driver behind Gronholm in the later Focus days. If I remember right.
It is interesting that the "pro WRC" drivers tend to have MkII Escorts for personal cars...
