Looks interesting. So tell me more, It's a racing sim, obviously, but since I'm not the right kind of nerd, I haven't really done much gaming.

The biggest hurdle for most is that you will need a wheel and pedals setup, which can be anywhere from under $100 used to many hundreds (they get quite sophisticated).  If you have that, and a computer, we can talk you through any other setup issues.

The car and track selection in Assetto Corsa is very large.   There are pretty good versions of most US tracks.

Thanks David!!   We are really lucky to have had a good group of people involved with this. Good competitive racing but in the end not to serious. Kind of like when you go to a HPDE event and a friendly race happens that then becomes a series.

Once you have the hardware a basic PC and a wheel and peddles the set up of the game is very easy. Yes there are a couple steps and there are actually three programs we use together.

We use Discord so we can talk with each other. It is Free.

The actual Assetto Corsa game. I think it is normally under $20. It goes an sale quit often for $7.99

The last is called Content Manager. It is as the name implies. It makes managing the Assetto Corsa game content mech easier. Basicly a much better interface with the game that makes everything easier.  It is also free for the base version. There is a paid version that is somthing like $1.00 donation. (The version I have).

It sounds daunting compared to a Xbox or a PS console but it really does take less than 5 minutes to set it up. There is very little actual configuring of things that you need to do. It all just works.

Newbe here - do you buy Assetto Corsa from Steam?

Tunakid 1 (who is Unwound09 here I think) has really enjoyed this and noted that the group was patient and helpful despite his youthful ignorance.

Thanks guys! There's no way in the universe that I would ever have time, but I am glad you're all doing it!

I got AC a couple years back for free or 99 cents. I still need to get a rig though. Car parts or fake car parts...dammit.

Yes.  Get the ulimate edition or whatever.  It frequently goes on sale for $7.  Even if you pay full price though, its a good game (and frankly inconsequential compared to the cost of a rig, computer, etc).

Its playable with a controller.  Wheel is preferred, but you can still come join the fun.

I really need to get my a$$ in gear and join. Haven't been using the sim much the last few months. Life is starting to calm back down a bit so I hope I can get it together to join.

I might have to join. I just canxed my iRacing subscription. While I love using iRacing for practice, I was tired of constantly getting punted in races, I was tired of getting my ass handed to me in private rooms, just so Player X could say he won this event on his twitter, or the guy who made the baseline tune for a league being the only person who wins (or his team), and found myself only playing with the AI most of the time.

Can I used the Cat mod?

I own AC, and most (all?) the DLC, I should really install it one day and join in now that my pc is not a potato.

You all are welcome to join in!!!  Run every week or show up when you can.  The mission statement for this is we are all like-minded racing people and we treat it like we are at the track with real people.  IE. be respectful to others.  Don't overdrive the car.  If you miss a corner put yourself in the wall, not the other guy.  "Dive bombing" and moving people out of the way is not what we are promoting.  You can get that in the public rooms if you want to.   It is the job of the passing car to pass cleanly.  It is the job of the car being passed to hold its line.

Again we are trying to replicate the race craft and racing etiquette of real-life racing.  There are some people that I can catch but passing is a whole different story.  Making your car wide by placing it where the passing car wants to be is perfectly legal (there are some caveats to this obviously).  There was a guy called Greyfin here on GRM that raced with us years back and he was dubbed "The Grey Wall" He was one of the cleanest sim racers I have ever raced with and yet passing him was exceptionally difficult.

The bottom line; For this to be fun there has to be some give and take by everyone.  AND also understand that people do make mistakes.  You are going to get punted at some point.  Hell, it happened to me last week.  It will happen again.  It is part of racing.

What would I need as far as a PC to run AC?  I have a laptop currently but don't think it has much as far as a decent video card in it....

In reply to Region_Rat :

It is a 10 year old game.  A 900 series GPU and a decent computer from 2018 will be fine.

A 10 series card is better. There are some here using them.  I run a 2060super and get 250fps at 2k.

The short of it is it should run fine on just about any computer 5 years old or newer.

You can basically run AC on a potato with the graphics turned down, I play it maxed out at 4K and only having a lot of high-detail cars on the course challenges my GTX 1070 Mini.

It's also possible to run it with Wine on Linux but again, not easy.

Hooking a laptop up to a decent TV with an HDMI cable would probably be a decent setup.  A laptop screen might be pretty difficult to setup with a wheel.  I can race OK with a controller, but only with some cars (not the more tricky ones) and I am probably, at best, 80% of what I am with a wheel (I am reasonably experienced with driving games on a controller of course).  Precise steering is the biggest issue with a controller and over controlling is super easy to do.

Of note:  I do have NVIDIA GTX 1050 video card for a desktop I would gladly distribute to someone who can use it.  It's a somewhat older card, but will run AC fine at 1080 resolution (which I was doing).  I upgraded so I can run at 4K (which is super useful since I record the videos).

There are also other potential "fringe benefits" (as in actual real world rewards) to racing with us... but you will just have to join to figure those out. wink
