I've been to Iowa Speedway before - it's a great place for racing.
However, I've never been a spectator there. I'd recommend going as high as possible - some prefer the final turn, others prefer turn 1, and some prefer the start-finish line - your preference. Most seats appear to be in the sun - so bring sunscreen and a hat.
If I remember right, I stayed like 20 miles away as the hotel prices came down quite a bit that far out.
Des Moines isn't too far away. There's a barbecue restaurant named "Smokey D's" just off I-80 that I'm pretty doggone fond of... YMMV
