A friend of mine desperately wants to unload a truly awful 1993 Infinity J30... I'm pretty sure he would just GIVE me the stupid thing, and I have a hard time resisting free cars...

I know it's rear wheel drive and a V6. It's got a horrendous slipping automatic and a good running V6. I've been told it shares its platform with the 90-96 300ZX. True? Anyone know?

I'm thinking of making a Challenge car out of it... A manual swap, an interior gutting and a flat black fogging are my first thoughts.

Any ideas?

Yes, related to the early 300zx, at least the same engine. You may find some support at www.freshalloy.com forums where you may have to register in order to read.

Dang. I passed on one of these a few years ago b/c I thought that they were FWD and based on the nissan maxima. Not that the maxima is bad, but I was looking for a RWD at the time. The one I found was even a stick if I remember correctly. Anyone know which trannies might fit into the J30?

I dont think J30s were ever available with manual trannies.

the I30 is maxima based, and may be available as a 5-sp. The j30 was rwd and always a slushbox. I feel like a ninny saying this but I never bought one because the trunk looked too small. Swap in a Z32 tranny and give 'er a 300 shot.

The tranny out of the 2nd gen 300ZX (Z32) should bolt right up. You'll have to get the drive shaft custom fit and you will most likely have to fabricate the input flange on the drive shaft with one from the 300ZX.

Widen the hole in the tranny tunnel, find a pedal assembly from a 300ZX and fabricate the mounts and make sure there's room for the clutch master cylinder and VOILA!! You've got a VG30 powered 5-speed J30!

A J30 is RWD? I thought it was just a pimped up Maxima.

Nah, the vsld/torsion whatever it is, is a popular unit for 240sx guys.

The trunk is way too small. And their is absolutely no aftermarket suspension parts for the car, not even some KYB GR-2's or Tocrapco Blues, and its a real boat. My friend had one briefly, he now owns an I30 ironically. The transmission was slipping when he got it too.

Oh ok. I was thinking I30. That makes sense. Thanks. I feel better now.
