What do people think? Have the 633 and 635csi bottomed out in terms of price? Is there any upside from here? Everyone seems to agree that these are just insanely sexy. So with drivers changing hands for two grand or less, is this the time to buy the best one you can locate?
I don't think they're going to get any cheaper, but while you can find them for two grand I think you'll have to spend more than that for a good one.

i own 2 and use one as a DD a 1983 and have a 1985 M6 and just bought one off a member on this forum who was building a challenge car out of it. there is a lot of problems with these cars. from rear window problems to AC/heater controls. but there are a lot of upgrades from the 7's like brakes. i love them at the the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix it was the year of the "Shark"

Rust is the single make-or-break issue. The mechanicals are the same as the E28 5-series, and pretty bulletproof besides. Unless you have piles of cash to throw into bodywork (yes, the panels are still available from BMW, but they aren't cheap), make really, really certain it's free of rust.
I've always thought it looks like a fat old man's car.

how did you know what i looked like. it must be true
Those are my favorite BMW. Make mine an M6 in white with matching white BBS wheels ala Spencer for Hire.

Interior trim can be a problem as well, if you get one that's weathered. Dash cracks are pretty common, and the leather parts of the rear seat / package tray can warp from exposure to the sun.
They are super-sexy and great highway cruisers. The big six sounds like sex. I haven't seen any around that had decent leather left in the front seats seats but they were great, comfortable chairs to reel off miles.
A bit of a heavyweight in the twisties though but - that wasn't what it was for so you can hardly ding it on that account.
You should buy one.

Along with an 850csi, a 6 is on the g/f's bucket list. In both cases, I believe it would be much better to spend on the high side and buy one with low miles and in perfect condition. She'll either need a new boyfriend or more money for somebody to work on them, since it damn well won't be me. I'm done with wrenching on berked up 80's and 90's cars.

The 8 is several orders of magnitude worse to work on than the 6, and that's without getting into the whole "V12 that's actually two I6s grafted together so there's two of everything" nonsense. The 6 is pretty straightforward.

It is 2 of everything but... it is pretty straightforward from what I hear - the six isn't a difficult motor to work on at all. I haven't ever really had to work on a 12 though so I am just repeating things I've heard in the paddock. I would love to find one with a bad motor... and have El Es Juan fix 'er up for me :)

It's not just the engines - it's everything else.
