Heyoo hive! I'm looking to actually experiment with the info I wrote up in the Jag Diff Thread about changing ratios and adding an LSD on the relative cheap.
So, now I need to go grab a pumpkin at a local JY. Easy peasy, I know what I need, I know they have one. First gen Lincoln LS differential.
What next? What should I do with it? I need to open it up and pop in the LSD itself (that I also have to source, anyone have a Ford 8.8 28 spline laying around?). What is necessary? Will I need to set the backlash and pinion depth, or will I not have to R&R the meshy bits and can leave it alone? Seals, and stuff? Any rebuild kits anyone know of? I'll likely get a used LSD, what will it need?
If I could find a factory dif that had the LSD in it, I'd likely say that it was in good enough shape to propel the donor car into a tree, it's probably fine. Though I'd probably check the pattern for fun. - This will not be the case.
Also, since I'll be adding new half-shafts (go ebay go!) is there anything special I need to do to get them and the pumpkin and the existing drive shaft to play well together.
TLDR: Pull pumpkin from JY and pop in LSD, what should I R&R, what should I leave alone? Help, this is all new to me, but I can read and I have patience!
I'm no expert, but the Lincoln unit probably shares a lot with the Ford units. If that is the case, I'm betting there is a thread somewhere (Mustang forum) or Youtube Video about rebuilding a Ford LSD.
As for sticking it in the Jag, that's going to be a bit harder.

Why not just get a Ford 8.8 IRS different from the back of a 3rd Gen Explorer? It's already LSD, and they are dirt cheap, plus it's an 8.8 so every gear ratio imaginable is available.
Rebuild the trac loc while you have it out. Dont do what i did and have to pull it back out. Clutch kit for the rebuild with the improved clutches is about 80bucks.
This I relevant to my interests. My new to me truck has a Dana 60 that has been humming for the last 100k. I would like to rebuild it but the whole setting up of a dif is more of a black art than a science. I have done a couple over the years out of a need to keep a vehicle on the road on the cheap and non ever let go but all were a bit more noisy than I liked. To me setting up a rear end is as much about feel as it I about the numbers an a gauge. It is a black art passed down to those special few.
So is there a good book and or you tube bids that coil get M going in the right direction or should I just suck it up and have a shop do it?
Jav, the reason I'm looking at the Lincoln dif is that it "should" bolt right up and the half-shafts "should" just work. I could potentially pop the dif and new shafts in without opening it up and change my ratio, but without an LSD, that just makes the situation worse. The Explorer 8.8 undoubtedly has 31 or 34 splines and I need 28 unless I want to get into changing even more stuff, which I'd prefer not to at this point.
I don't have equipment to fab up mounts for a dif.
Good idea Brett, that seems obvious now...
Thanks all!
Anyone else have any insight?
