NickF40 - I think speedblind is saying that even with Ken's car and practice time, his performance could not be duplicated by most people. I'd agree with that statement.
Undoubtedly, there are other drivers that could produce the videos that Ken has, but they haven't. If people think he's the greatest driver ever, it just shows that they're not knowledgeable about what driving talent is out there.
I don't see how anyone can read into Ken's personality from those videos. Does he even say anything? How is it any different than the millions of other videos on the internet where someone filmed themselves doing something they thought others might enjoy? The only difference I see is that Ken's videos involve professionals behind the wheel and the camera.
I do very much agree on that and the videos miss on what he's actually like. But even like you said though, as with his car and practice, it will be hard to duplicate that, yes, I understand but like at his own event, Tanner did well as long with a few Formula D drivers but Vaughn Gitten beat him at his own game, so what supposedly only "he" can do, it can be done by others that have racing experience. And how do you think these guys became what they are, they practiced, took schools, whatever. So if one of us got schooling, a prepped car and some racing experience then we can be just like Ken was and we might be able to do what he does, maybe not to the EXACT tee but what i'm saying is, it isn't impossible for anyone else. He wasn't a rally/gymkhana driver before all this, other than owning his own company he was like one of us.
I am more than happy to have more people energized in participating in organized rally. Insurance has damn near killed the sport in the US and an influx of young rallyists just might help.
I know, that's what hopefully will help it out. I have been watching rally ever since I could see so when it went away for stupid reasons..let's just say we need it back so yes, an american competing in a european dominated sport, AWESOME! I love it, we need more american competition in european circuits. More coverage also is well needed so yes, if a hord of young ones that get into rally is attracted, then it just may help!
I dont see what the big deal is really, I just watch the videos a couple times and think "thats pretty cool to see someone make a car do that stuff" then don't think about it much other than that.

Liar! Only one was in a bikini...
But it was nice, none the less.
I don't much care what he's like.
He drives Fiesta, that means he makes smaller cars cool.
He and his brand(s) are a motorsport juggernaut, and its nice to see something out there besides Redbull.
But I do think the dude has got to test his merit against the best.

Again, you're projecting. Your posts are full of assertions that it's possible that other people could do what he does. Nobody's arguing that. You seem to think that Block is trying to position himself as the best driver of all time...at least that's where it seems most of your angst is coming from. I've never heard him make any such statement. In fact, in every interview he comes across as a pretty down to earth guy.
So what, exactly is making you so upset about the popularity of the videos?

Like Speedblind, I don't know who or what you're arguing about. Are there people that say he's the greatest driver ever and nobody could ever do what he does? That seems to be what you're saying. Like me previous post said, if someone says something to that effect, it just reveals their ignorance.
So what if you or anyone else could do it, with the right car, right training, right experience, etc, etc. Nobody else is right now. Does it mean nobody else can? Of course not. It just means nobody else has bothered. And if someone comes along and makes videos as entertaining, then great, everyone will watch that guy too. So what?
Me, my friends (College guys) and pretty much all my racing friends like Ken Block. I rock a flat bill every once in a while, I even just got a new DC hat. You have to respect what he does. Not just his car control but his company, the creation of an entirely new market to the U.S. and the fact that he is doing what he loves and sharing it with others. His videos have impacted a whole generation that now respect the smaller cars and have fun driving them (ring a bell?).
P.S. my team name for out beer pong tournament yesterday was Team Ken Block.

Yes, there are many that say that, and that's what this is all about. I don't understand it I guess. And for that reason is why the second part you said is going to be hard for someone else, if someone did a video doing something like Ken did, do you think he will become famous? be considered as good as him? be as impressive? And he's a great guy, very down to earth in person and a funny guy! I love his videos but as some of us see along with myself, I consider him a youtube sensation, I love his videos but unlike some of these kids that I was talking to the other day, I look at him as a rookie in WRC and know he has some learning to do and he even said he is learning. He done some crazy thing with these cars, but I along with a good bit of others don't think he's the best there ever was, like some are presenting him as, that's what i'm trying to say haha I guess since they haven't seen racing to give them a break since they don't know. I'm too paranoid I guess! But I don't have a problem with him himsellf....

Hey, he started somewhere! He didn't have race experience before, all i'm saying A normal person like you or I can do EXACTLY what he did to start his 2nd career.
If someone says Ken Block is the greatest ever, I think I'd roll my eyes and move on, but perhaps that's not true since I've taken the time to read this thread and respond.
It's just like everything else, whenever someone says "this/that/he/she is the best (fill in the blank) ever", it means it's the best they've seen or experienced. If you know something better, it's because your knowledge is different.
If a little kid says his daddy is the strongest man on the planet, do you argue with him?

But nobody cares about unrealized potential. It doesn't matter if Ken Block is putting on a car exhibition or sewing a quilt, if he does it well and makes it interesting, people will watch. All that is seen is the accomplishment, not what did or didn't go into getting there.
