The general consensus is they will guzzle gas like a sailor, overbuilt, make it through a third world country and go through anything.

I haven't heard anything from the seller...so probably no real concerns. I have a 211k mile 2wd V8 Explorer, so this might actually be a step DOWN in fuel economy, power, and towing capacity, but a step up in luxury, offroadability, and cool points. reliability is probably an even split, but the j80 does have 70k fewer miles.

ehh...we'll see. It will probably never amount to anything.

Reliability is not a remotely lateral move between those two in my experience.

Pardon my thread jacking, but can we shift back to discussing the big Montero's again?

I periodically see them for sale at really tempting prices. Then I remember that they are Mitsus, and all my bad mitsu memories come flooding back.

I've heard people say that the big Montes aren't built like other Mitsu products, and they are rivals to Range Rovers in off road capabilities and have Toyota-esque build quality.

Based on my Mitsubishi experiences, I say that has to obsessed fanboi talk. Can anyone confirm or refute that notion?

What kind of axle does the Montero have. I'm looking for a wheeling SUV cause my truck only holds 3. Actually wouldn't mind swapping axles either as I hope to get some soon.

I had a '92 SR, that I bought for almost nothing. The PO had over heated it so bad the heads melted and the block was blued.

With the help of a spare V6 from a Dodge minivan from Vigo and some modifications, it got back on the road.

I liked it. I'd certainly do another Montero, if I needed another SUV and couldn't source of La Forza.

The SR is the one to get if you want to go off road.
