Would/Could Volkswagen buy Chrysler? VW seems to like the Chrysler Minivan. VW does not have a truck line and VW has the world wide dealer network to successfully market the Jeep.

You mean Porsche buy Chrysler?

Now that Porsche pretty much owns VW.

Now really.... Since MBZ failed to convery Chrysler into a money maker I am not sure any German car company would want them as a whole. Parts maybe.

I still don't understand why GM would want to buy Chrysler. They make the same products Chrysler makes under several different nameplates and they already have too much capacity for current economic conditions. In fact GM would probably choke on Chrysler and that would take down both companies.

On the other hand, I do understand why the Three Headed Dog would want to dump Chrysler on GM and get out of the car business, especially if the Feds subsidize the purchase.

Daimler tried to take Chrysler upscale, sorta like an entry level Benz. That backfired. Now Chrysler is floundering without a real identity unless you count Jeep.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Chrysler as we know it probably won't exist within 5 years but Jeep will continue.

Benz GOT what they needed out of ChryCo, and if they would have held on for another 2 years they could have been responsible for getting the union situation resolved.

IF P-VAG were to get ChryCo it would need to get a new union agreement and resolution to the legacy issues.

Hmmm, I was approved for a new Dodge PU just last week, and I never even applied. I would like to replace the Hemi Durango before they stop building them though. That's a broad brush Greg Tivo is painting with...

Well, Cerberus bought Chrysler from Daimler-Benz at pretty much a flea-market price compared to what DC had put into the "Merger of Equals". The company is worth even less now.

It may get to the point where all of Chrysler could be bought cheaply enough to toss alot of babies out with the bath water, and keep Jeep and a maybe a couple trucks.

Plus, even after DC bailed there remains a strong Germanic link, at least with Jeep. At the Jeep Toledo Supplier Park, the body-in-white for the Wrangler is built by a robotics company that's based in Augsburg, Germany. Once built, the bodies go next door to an Austria-based company for paint and powdercoat. And as we all know, Austrians are simply Germans without all that light-hearted humor.

DC was always really happy with what they were getting out of the Wrangler facility, and some BMW Big-Cheese-Dogs were pretty much blown away after they toured the body shop awhile back.

I could see a German company buying Chrysler as a whole, once the price gets low enough... Kinda like buying a parts-car, knowing you'll be scrapping 90% of the thing just to get a couple goodies.

However, as mentioned before, the legacy costs would be a major sticking point, and my esteemed leaders in the UAW would need to get their heads out of their asses so I could keep my job!!!

Daimler got some good stuff out of the deal.

They now own freightliner and as such have cemented their sprinter here.

Daimler actually bought Freightliner in the 80's. It just seems like it was recent because they've never bothered to try and integrate it into their worldwide truck operations until recently.

Dodge definitely helped with the Sprinter though...

There were some rumblings a while back that Mercedes would take over the Ladson assembly plant and produce the Sprinter van as a Mercedes only, thus cutting Dodge out of the van sales. Dunno if that's only a rumour or still the deal or not.

FWIU it is still an idea. Rumor was ChryCo would be able to have the option to purchase van from DB as a model through 2015.

+1 on Mercedes/Sprinter Van based Class 3 Motorhomes. Especially if they put Mercedes grilles on them.
