Sadly, it looks like the seller of the FoRS I'd planned on buying *might* be trading it in instead. Pretty bummed, especially since I *just* sold my DD.

The only other 2018 NB RS I've found is on the opposite corner of the country and I don't want it *that* bad.

If the deal falls through, I might just buy a damned truck. Looking at 2020 Tacomas. Double cab, 4WD manual. Bonus points if I could find that combo in "cement" exterior.

Aside from the short bed, what's not to love?

All I can say is all of the Tacoma owners I know have spent some time at the dealer for warranty work, although nothing terribly serious. It seems Toyota reliability isn't what it used to be, so if that is one of the main factors, there may be others with similar reliability for less money.

I'm a Toyota fan boy. But my newer ones don't seem to be worth the Toyota tax anymore. Once upon a time yes.  Now. Ehhhh

Seems like *mostly* glowing reviews(?) There are a couple new or almost new 5.0 4WD F-150's locally in the sub $40k range. Worth a look as a "dissenting vote?"

Or 4.3/5.3 Silverados?

TLDR version: I love my 2019 Tacoma. It's my second one. No reliability issues. I'd buy another. It's not great at towing though.

Not super concerned about fuel economy. The towing thing is a bummer though. I wouldn't tow with it a ton, but the ability to tow the challenge car to an auto-x would be nice.

Also, say a prayer to the heathen gods I still get the FoRS. But I also kinda figure I'll end up in a truck in the next few years anyway, so maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing to "skip a step."

Just here to say I love the cement color.

Unless you're parking in the city or building a serious off-roading rig, just get a full-size truck. There isn't much of a value proposition for a midsize.

I need 4-doors for the kiddos and 4WD, under $40k, preferably around $35k. Bonus points for manual. Wife needs to be able to park it. What would you be looking at?

Anecdotal for sure, but I feel like the the RWD based variants are still worth it.

I disagree.

My 2005 was a double cab long bed and it was a bitch to park just about anywhere. It was exactly as long as my friend's Silverado. My 2019 double cab short bed is much easier to live with on a daily basis.

I know that Toyota has been working on a power closing tailgate. They sent me an owner survey with videos asking if it would be an option that I would have considered had it been available. They even went so far as to ask where I would prefer the controls to be located. Follow up questions asked if I would be willing to pay $300 of $400 for the option. I absolutely would.

I suspect that it may be coming on the 2021 Tacoma. I might be inclined to wait for that.

Power closing? I thought my power opening on my F-350 was odd. Of course the older I get, the more I understand :)

Fair enough on the parking front. But I've always felt that anything that technically fits in the space will become second-nature after a few months of driving. Heck, even my old extended E-250 was fine after a few months of DD duty. But different people have different preferences.

IMHO The parking tradeoff switching from a Tacoma to a full-sized truck is worth it, you get way better towing, way more room in the cab, better mileage and better availability.

Here's my opinion, Having driven more than one trim/drivetrain of all of the currently-available pickups on the market except the newest Ranger.

Go directly to a Ford dealership and buy a 3.5 Ecoboost F150 in your preferred configuration. There's a reason it's the best-selling truck in America.

I was >< this close to doing just that a year or so ago, and was planning to dump the LEAF and daily the F150 to combine cars. Used aluminum XLTs with 4x4 were in the mid-$20s used.

Here's why I didn't do it: A buddy with the same trailer and a lighter race car than mine bought one, and described the towing experience as "totally doable but you can DEFINITELY tell it's there." At that point I realized that to comfortably tow a 20' enclosed trailer with a car and tools on 1000-mile trips, I needed a 3/4 ton truck, which are miserable to drive every day. I didn't really want a car payment, anyway, so I kept the leaf and bought my F250.

I just got a second owner’s survey asking if I would buy a power closing tailgate on my next truck (I would).

Sounds like that’s gonna happen.

Having spent some time slinging the parts that get replaced on current Tacoma's, I'd say they're pretty good. The new 3.5 uses DI, but aside from a couple freak incidents, no problems to speak of. There was(is?) a recall on the rear diffs, but that shouldn't be an issue. Some problems (again, open campaign) with the 3rd brake light leaking water into the cab. Biggest issue I can think of is they seem to eat blower motors at an alarming rate.

Personally, I hate the automatics. But I understand there is an aftermarket reflash for the trans control that makes them better? I don't care for Toyota's rear camera system, I much preferred the camera in my Fit. The seats aren't great, but that's a personal thing. I don't like the 2gr, reliable powerhouse that it is, I just find it soulless. They cost too much. That's all I got.
