So I went to the $2013 Challenge and was instantly hooked. I am hell bent on building a car for 2014.

If I could find a good deal on an MG B or Midget, Miata, or roadster something I would totally go for it.

Being a pretty novice gear head, reading the build threads to the race cars on the forum teaches me so much. Do you think you guys could shoot me some links to any $20xx challenge car build threads?

Any tips? I'm hoping to go forward with a build starting around May/June, we'll see. I couldn't believe the amount of effort so many people put into this event. I want in.

I only have one simple thing to say:

Don't get caught up in trying to reinvent the wheel, bring any car under the budget that you can and just have fun with it.

^This.

You couldn't tell me for one second that i'd have more fun if i brought something other than my daily driver.

I'd figure out what other kind of automotive tomfoolery you want to do, autox, rallycross, Crapcan etc and build it for that and just have fun at the challenge

Google s10 drivabeater

That was my first attempt. On here, there is a neon acr that started as my second attempt and became my daily.

I agree with above, Think about what you want to do with it afterwards, then build it. We have a fairly simple, cheap, easy build for $2014. Small amount of work, small amount of money, and tons of fun. We autocross it at least once a month, and we'll be back for $2014. We have built a rare car, and a common car. Common is much easier.

What about a V8 Dakota with a little sniff of nitrous?

Why just a sniff? Go the whole overdose.

my first attempt ended with me being a spectator since my grand attempt wasn't running by the time the challenge rolled around - too ambitious of a project for the time and skills I had then. The second attempt went better starting with a runner rather than building from scratch - I still miss that car. Should have kept it as a daily.

I'm gonna try to run in the next few years. If I do I'm gonna try to find a small truck, a cheap V8, and a BIG sniff of giggle gas

After my one failed attempt, I decided it's going to be a $1900 car, a can of wax and a 12 pack.

More fun that blowing up in the parking lot.

Focus on autox. Start with a well known platform for autoxing, with great after market support, high volume of production numbers, and simple user-friendly Internet forums.

Therefore, VW would be great, but you will have to put up with the Vortex, which is not good enough for a beginner.

Consider Miata, Honda, SBC, etc.

Start with something running, and KEEP it running (autox it weekly, and only do small incremental improvements that can be completed on Saturday so it can be raced again on Sunday).

The $20XX Classified on this board is a great place to buy cars.

BTW, I had never entered a racing event of any kind before I entered the $2004 Challenge. I placed 13th overall. It CAN be done!

Welcome aboard!

Notice the trend? Started too late and aimed too high and had issues. Our group has built and entered multiple other times and once or twice done reasonably well but it was never quick or easy. I will +1 all the other comments of start simple with a running competent chassis.

Do all that if you want to finish as high as possible with the most fool proof method and the least amount of work.

Or, build something super crazy that probably won't finish high but will teach you a lot and be way, way more fun to drive. The racing part is kind of fun, but for me building and hanging out with builders is way more fun.

There's a lot of ways to skin this cat. The important thing to note is that you can't win it if you're not in it!

Bryce is right. There is a great deal of satisfaction in being creative and stretching your capabilities in the build.

So maybe I should clarify...

I was not offering a formula to succeed. There are many, and I've tried several.

I was offering a more specific response to your question, and focusing on the fact that you are a novice gear head, want to build it in a couple months, and are apparently building alone.

Me too.

The most important part is that you come.

Therefore, I think that YOU should keep it simple.

I've done simple, I've done radical, I've done buy-and-drives, and I've come with no car. I've had fun with all.

By far the biggest risk I take is when I try a radical build. I've had several that didn't make it, and that's no fun. As Bryce has noted, you gotta be there.

Bryce is an engineer, and a better builder than me. He built something creative that stretched his abilities and was more fun to drive.

As a novice, I have also built stuff that was significantly LESS fun to drive. That really sucks.

But Bryce and I both measure ourselves by the same standard- it is a thrill to stretch ourselves, be there, and have fun.

This year was probably the most fun I've ever had. Some people thought my MINI was nothing more than a lucky purchase. It was that, but it was also 3 months of tremendous effort and careful decisions within a plan. I applied everything I learned in the past 10 years about making cars go fast and Challenge building.

And I placed 7th. It felt awesome.

All excellent advice from everyone! Be sure to go to the event page and read over the rules. If you have any questions, let us know and we are here to help. The main thing is to come and have fun!

Fast ones.

That look terrific, and have an awesome build story.

That makes sense. But like what kind of setups? I saw a video of a turbo Cherokee from last year that looked like it was kicking ass

Light weight, V-8, and rear wheel drive seem to be a winning combo.
