1: get a 3kgt of some nature

2: Use the fwd lsx variant from the Malibu ss

3: ??????

4: profit!

It's called an LS3 (maybe LS4).

You'd have to use a GM trans. In theory you could cobble something up using minivan parts if you wanted AWD, but it would mainly be just to prove a point more than for performance.

Yeah, you can already make more power with a 6g72 than four tires can hook up, so there arent really any swaps that make sense from a power potential standpoint.

What about a liveability standpoint?

Seems to me the massive pain in the ass that's under the hood turns most people off them forever. I'd imagine that an engine with the power potential to at least match the 6g72 without being so damn complicated would be a winner. Plus it would probably get better gas mileage.

Completely random musings, I still don't understand why Mitsu didn't give the 4g Eclipse awd and call it the 3000gt. Seems accurate for the kinda porky gt car that it was, ya know?

GM should have made the Malibu SS AWD.

I have owned a 3000gt with the NA 6g72 for about 6 or 7 years. I like to think of these as the "Italian" car of Japan, if that makes any sense. They require maintenance if you want them to keep running. Unfortunately these are cheap to buy and the people that buy them treat them like a Honda or Toyota and don’t do any maintenance, resulting in lots of even cheaper broken ones.

I don’t think these are any worse to work on than a DSM, not that DSMs are easy to work on.

I had one for 5 years. It's fun when it runs, but other than that they are generally unreliable pieces of E36 M3, tempremental transmissions that are almost impossible to find parts for, hard to find parts for in general, and awful AWFUL weight balance (68:32 stock IIRC). Never again...

If you're looking for a fast, cheap, good looking 90's Japanese sports car, I'd pick a 300ZX with an LSx swap over a 3/S every time.

That's the only way you'd get me to own another one of these things.

I don't know anything about these cars, but we recently recapped an ECU for a kid with a JDM GTO VR4 motor and drivetrain in a Stealth RS. I told him I want to see it when he gets it sorted. It's a sleeper.... sort of.

Some of those base model stealths were about the un-fastest looking, un-coolest looking 'sporty cars' ever made. So i can sorta see the sleeper angle.

What with all this complaining about VR4-specific problems, im suprised noone's getting excited about my VGT holset boosted SOHC project!

Zombie thread! Brought back from the dead to ask: do the AWD and FWD cars use the same floor? Or, can AWD be bolted into a cheap, FWD Stealth? AWD coupled with a 3.8 from a Grand Caravan might make for a neat Challenge car

there are a few differences in the rear tub/subframe mounting. That said, it's been done by more than a couple people. I owned an N/A dohc stealth for 4 years and sold it about 8 years ago. The info on how to do it is out there.

For the record, a 6g62tt fits in a starion pretty well. Its finding a rwd transmission that fits behind the 6g thats the problem. There's a guy with a red 6g72tt starion with a th400 and megasquirt. Last time I looked it was making 800+ hp on twin gt30's (not sure).

The kia sorento 6spd supposedly hooks uo to the 6g but the trans is too big for a starion chassis.

Also I think people use diamonte intake manifolds for rwd 6g swaps.

Why do people focus on the engine part of the equation? The engine is the best part of the car. The problems stem from lack of access to anything because the engine bay is so small, and you have to access a lot of things because Mitsubishi is fond of discrete small brackets for everything. Where most companies would use a megabracket with four bolts, Mitsubishi would use three or four smaller stamped brackets with 14 bolts and the brackets are co-dependent for positioning.

Swapping an engine isn't going to change any of that. It's just going to be the same problems with new ones that you added.
