Emailed the guy in the ad and he said the car needed a clutch master cylinder too. I'm not buying unless I can get it really cheap.

For what he's asking, it's not worth it. That car isn't half as good as he claims.
Unfortunately, the Z31 is an orphan when it comes to aftermarket support in the Z world. They're heavy and have mediocre suspension at best. I would go for a 280ZX Non-turbo. They're incredibly simple, lighter, have slightly better suspensions and use the same engine and tranny from 1970 to 1983.
The L28 inline 6 is unbelievably reliable and resilient to abuse and all the engine upgrade parts developed for the first gen Z cars will work on the 280ZX engine and there's still a lot of aftermarket support for them:

I would definitely pass on that eBay Z31.
Thanks for the advice. I'd love a 280 if I could find one in my price range. I'm gonna keep looking. At least I've got the fund started, I don't have to purchase anything that I don't want.
I'm surprised nobody has added that engine maintenance tends to involve dislocating your wrists...there is not a lot of room under that hood. Timing belts are a major failure point, and a pain in the ass to do.
In high school, I bought an Mk2 Supra, and my buddy bought a Z31. We both liked the Supra better; a bit simpler electrically, a ton simpler mechanically, and it always felt more like the sports car to the Z31's grand tourer. Similar performance, but in the twisties the Supra would walk away every time.

Agreed changing the oil filter in my friend's is kinda like brain surgery.
