So I'm reading a catch can would be a good idea for my FRS even as a n/a car, especially with the amount of autocross and track time I'm getting. There are some super cheap universal ones for $50 on ebay I'm considering, or $150-200 depending on new/used of the quality name brand stuff.

Can I snatch up a cheap ebay one, stuff some sort of filtering media in the can, and be good or is there more to it? I don't mind paying the money for the right one, but some stuff isn't as complicated as people tend to say.

So, what benifit is a catch can in an n/a application? I can understand turbo contamination in forced induction....

Oil blowby into the intake system from what I understand. Some are getting a teaspoon roughly per track day or autocross. It honestly may not even be necessary, and I'm not opposed to it being an idea that I can kick to the curb. I plan to look in the intake to see what kinda grossness may or may not be there.

I'm not a fan of knock-off/cheap parts. They may "work," but typically longevity/fitment/quality isn't nearly as good.

I'd probably lean toward the Radium or RacerX one myself.

From the research I have done, the cheap ones are cheap because they don't have much internally to actually separate the oil from the air. The expensive ones have baffles, mesh, and media to circulate the air through and pull out the oil. You can approximate this to a minor degree by stuffing a cheap one full of steel wool or similar material.

Look for one that has physical separation between the inlet and outlet, so that the air has to travel through your media and any baffles.

Also, when looking, keep in mind that the PCV system needs to be sealed to prevent vacuum leakage.

We had a thread where edizzle89 adapted a Harbor Freight compressed air part to be a catch can.

It also had a brief reference to OEM BMW oil separators.

I thought the BRZ didn't need a catch can because it has port fuel injection in addition to the direct injection. Any oil that gets into the manifold or onto the valves gets sprayed off with gasoline.

There is still plenty of oil vapor that gets taken out of the intake tract.

Which helps with detonation on a 12.5:1 comp engine running pump gas.
