So I'd like to get a tune in my  suburban but don't know where to start.

Buy a programmer ? Send my PCM in to be flashed ? what's the right way to do it ?

Find a local specialist who can tune it for you and make sure you know what you're looking for - safe towing? Maximum power on E85? Maximum fuel economy?

And you also have to know what you are willing to break to achieve an alternate goal.

How do you find "A local specialist" ?

Google, local car clubs, yellow pages, word of mouth, etc. The same way you'd find a hot rod shop. Key words are "tuning", "dyno" and "HP Tuners" for a Suburban.

For the combo of "Suburban" and "Novice" I would go with a Blackbear tune and never look back.  They are a known entity, certainly better than a local guy with an unknown rep.
