My parents ordered a hybrid XL with just the safety features they wanted. They absolutely love it and it is exactly the amount of "truck" that they need. I drove it briefly and was shocked how excellent it was.

I figured I would like it but I was never a fan of the XL trim they always had when I was growing up. I must say, the XL trim is not what it was in a 2002 Ranger or 2001 Escape. It's nice!

I went XLT with lux package on mine. The heated seats and heated leather steering wheel are nice.

I also went for the copilot package on the XLT. The lane keep assist works pretty well without being intrusive or making you think it will do more than it will do.

I do wish in addition to the light on the mirror flashing that there was an audible tone if you hit the turn signal with something there. Might be lazy of me though.

I have a 2024 XLT hybrid. Have just over 3k miles on it. Was averaging 39 mpg in mostly urban driving until last week when the temps dropped to freezing or below. Getting 29 mpg in the current temps.

Had one issue in the first few hundred miles that seems to have been cured with a reflash of some modules. Had the brake light recall/reflash done at the same time. Haven't been on any long trips in it yet. 1 hour or so is the longest trip I've done in it. I have a 6'-3" tall coworker who has been in the back seat going to lunch a number of times & he says it's fine, but that is only 15 minutes at a time.

They were eligible for X-plan in 2024. I tried in 2023 & my local dealer wasn't willing or they weren't eligible. I forget which. I did X-plan just to make sure there weren't any stupid fees or ADM

Do we know how these things hold up to high mileage? Hybrid vs turbo? Like, are the drivetrains shared in other platforms that have been around longer?

They're an Escape underneath, so powertrain stuff applies to both.

The NA engine in the hybrid is basically a Duratec 4 cylinder, which Ford has used in everything over the last 20 years. Displacement varies a little over the years, but the Atkinsion cycle Duratec is hybrid specific, and came in Escape, Fusion and CMax hybrids for sure, as well as their Mercury/Lincoln twins. I think I read about a recall of Escape/Maverick hybrids for engine issues a year or two ago. They had some manufacturing issues that were causing bottom ends to seize. Seems to have been fixed.

Ford's E-CVT is the core of their hybrid powertrain, and is very similar to Toyota's famed Hybrid Synergy Drive. It's a super simple design with 2 electric motors and planetary gears. Ford and Toyota shared some tech over the years, and they have a pretty strong rep for reliability and efficiency. You'll see older Ford hybrids used as taxis pretty often for those reasons.

The Hybrid/AWD combo has been available in the Escape since 2020.

The 2.0L turbo has been offered as "the big engine" in the Escape since 2013.  It is also "the small engine" for the Edge and Explorer.  I have no real info on it's reliability but it's availability is significant.

What is the Atkinsion cycle's effect on compression and sound if any? People say the Maverick Hybrid engine sounds "industrial" and I agree with that but it sounds better than the mooing that comes from lower-RPM Fours over 2.2 liters or so. Like the 2.9 in my old 1st gen Colorado that still managed to average 17mpg despite being in an RCSB 2wd. Moooooo. Is the better sound of the Maverick engine due to Atkinson cycle? The compression ratio is also listed at 13.0:1 but doesn't need premium fuel. I'd almost think that much compression is going to make it sound meaner too.

Although 191hp/155tq is a bit worrisome with towing and the hybrid. Ive driven one CVT too, a versa, and I can't say I was filled with joy there.

Apparently the HP is combined but the torque is rated separately? The electric motor apparently has 173tq  so 328 combined isn't bad. Never owned a hybrid but 191/328 sounds great for a little truck doing truck stuff to me, especially with 40/33mpg.

I doubt id want to tow near 4k with it, but more than 2k sounds like a zx2 on a dolly etc

I really like the Maverick. It's a great light duty pickup and people hauler. I'd have bought one in a minute if they offered manual trans and awd.

Agree. I'd love to see them do a factory "sport truck" model with the Ecoboost, manual transmission, sporty suspension, and sticky tires. Would make a fun daily that you could autocross occasionally while still being great for Home Depot runs.

Four thousand pounds of towing is *almost* enough.

I seem to recall these didn't do that well off-road beyond a mainained fire road type environment when they first came out. I'll have to check back in on that.

They do offer that, actually. Everything but the manual, of course.

It's changed a few times since '13. And may have a total change in 2025 or so. It was something I was working on when I retired in '22.

Isn't the off road version the Bronco Sport?

The Lobo is cool. I forgot they did come out with that! For me personally a manual is still required for a fun DD.

I've been thinking similar thoughts about the Maverick as well but I like cheap insurance and the variety of E36 M3 boxes at my disposal. Maybe next year.

The Ford 2.5 hybrid engine/trans etc has been around for almost 20 years. Started in the "boxy" escapes way back around 2005. They had controller board issues the first few years and replacing that was like a $5k part. IIRC, they worked with Toyota in developing the hybrid transmission and electric motor which Toyota used in the Prius and Ford in the Escape, 500 maybe? And a few other models.

Actually longer than that. I drove a 2010 Escape AWD Hybrid for 3 years in a previous job. I think they were available in the Escape & Mercury Mountaineer? from the mid 2000's.

Do, i drove the hybrid and the ecoboost awd versions today. Think im going for an ecoboost/awd/4k tow 24 in black.

Now, local dealer offers a lifetime power train warrety with the forst three years of service included for 3k. Their trucks are all marked at msrp. Theyre willing to loan me a used one to pound some miles on to see if i like the seats long term.

Can i haggle over msrp? Do we have some sort of discount cheat code being grm/scca? Ive NEVER bought a new car, or financed a car. So im really nieve here...

I'd skip the power train warranty unless you already plan to have the dealer do all your service. Figure first 3 years maintenance should be pretty minimal, so you're not going to see $3k in value there, and I'm cynical of the level of fight you'll have trying to get something major covered down the road unless you pay to have *that* dealer do every single recommended service and repair.

This gives me pause.  These "lifetime warranties" are usually service agreements.  You agree to have EVERY maintenance schedule service done at the dealership and in exchange they say they will cover everything else for the lifetime.  EVERY oil change, every cabin filter, every tire rotation, etc.  You can not change your own oil...the dealership must do it.  And, the dealership sets the rates.  These wont be the $19.99 oil changes.

There are two goals here for the dealership:
1. You pay them thousands over the years and they will gladly return you hundreds in repairs.
2. They expect that you might go a few years of giving them thousands and when time comes for some 'free" transmission work they plan to void your agreement because you missed a cabin filter replacement interval.  Further more, you paid $3k up front for this "deal."

You will be at "their will."  When you have the car in for one of those $120 oil changes they might write on your order that they recommend the car needs pads and rotors all around  = $1,500.  If you pass on that brake job...voided agreement.  Yes, they will deny your transmission work because you didn't get the brake work done.

I hated that deal on my mother's old 2018 Accord. They didn't cover crap and you still had to pay some for service. It was on a lease and was like $35 a month.

Remember hybrid extends the gas engine's service interval. The manual doesn't even have service intervals in it since use case determines them and the truck knows when they need done. When you try to look it up in the manual it basically says "wait until the truck tells you" and "service intervals can reach over 10K miles". If you're running around electric a lot like I do it just won't need as much work. I'm at 10,500+ and it's not asking for anything.

I wanted to like the Maverick, the inside especially is a big turn off for me.

 Great mileage for sure though.

Ridgeline is MUCH nicer inside and out....and its WIDE inside so your not rubbing shoulders with a husky friend.

The in bed trunk and dual action tailgate really is a game changer.

Don't about in the states but in Canada a decked out Maverick really isn't far off the Ridgeline for pricing.

Personally I'd by a nearly new Ridgeline for the same money as a new Maverick in a heatbeat.

I've added a lift to my '24 trailsport for more trucklike looks and PRL intake to hear the old school VTEC V6 in all its glory lol.....100% sounds better then a turbo 4.
