for what it's worth the '91 CRX door mounted seat belts ARE NOT the passive restraint type of belts... they just hang from the door instead of the B pillar

Well, the original question was triggered by me stumbling across what looks like a nice 1st gen Si over in Redwood City. Looks like an original CA car as it's got the 80s plates on it and I've always liked the shape.

OTOH I'm tempted to say "sod it" if/when the Talon sells, just borrow a wheelbarrow full of cash and get myself another 911, given that that's the mid- to longer term plan anyway. But I could do without a car payment atm.

Here's the CRX in question, by the way:

Love the car. Hate the price. If you could do 3g hatch instead of a CRX, this is a much nicer car, IMO. (D16 swapped Challenge Hong. Now belongs to Gabe who used to work for GRM.) Geographically it might be insane though.

Actually, the price isn't that bad for out here - I've seen a couple of ropey, high milers (well over 200k) around here for over 2k and it'll take more than the difference to make them look that good. OTOH it's a dealer so there'll be more costs associated with it.

I assume with the 3g hatch you're referring to the contemporary Civic Si (sorry, I don't speak fluent Honda)? They seem to be like rocking horse E36 M3 around here compared to 1st gen CRXs.

The 87 in the link ^^^^^ I've driven it. It's a fun car. Take a look on redpepper too. There's a lot of guys from CA on there...there's a dude with a 10 second 3g as a matter of fact.

I live in Redwood City less than a mile from there. I don't know that particular dealer, but the used car dealers in that neighborhood tend to be the "We Finance Everyone" type of operations where the cars and the financing are overpriced. The exception is the Superformance / Shelby dealer two blocks west. Everything is a just expensive there. :-)

Tangent:

Fun thing about my town is we have to whole social economic spectrum compressed into a six mile by six mile area. 3/4 of a mile south from that little dealer is Ferrari and Maserati of Silicon Valley. A mile west is a Porsche dealer. We have, Honda, Mazda, Scion, Toyota, VW, Nissan, Infinity, Range Rover, Chysler, Dodge, Chevrolet, and Lotus dealers within 3 miles or so of my house. Up until two years ago I think, Tesla HQ was in the same area. I literally see just about everything in the new automotive universe driving through my town. It takes something unusual, like a an original Porsche 959 (it was real, not a 911 with a body kit) or Plymouth Superbird to stand out.

I've had three 1g's and three 2g's. I'll always prefer the look of the 1g's but as mentioned good ones are getting hard to find. Also as mentioned check where the panhard bar mounts, if that rusts off the car is effectively junk.

FWIW I'm 6'2"ish and never had a problem fitting in my 85 Si with a helmet on.

^This.........

I've had three 1st-gen CRX's; two were Si's. A co-worker went for a ride in my '84 Dx and was amazed at how well he could fit inside. Said co-worker was a 6'5" former college basketball player.

Yeah, that would be a 4.5k car by the time it's over here, or a week's worth of driving (probably both). Still, it sounds like it'd almost be worth it.

Every time someone asks about CRXs, I inevitably begin to search Craigslist for them. Then I get sad when I see how cruelly they have been treated by time and past owners.

Look at the ad itself - the dealer is advertising the same car all over the bay area, but if you wait until the ad with the black background loads, you'll see he's in Redwood City.

Eh. They have a house for sale too. Move to Chatt. Work the car into the negotiations.

But seriously, for 3k, you can do better than that one at the buy-here-pay-here. Good luck with the 'limited warranty'

It doesn't have to be a pipe dream. Just wait for the right one to come along. Fwiw, the 1g's seem to receive less molestation than the 2g's

Why did I have to read this thread and come across this post? I have moved into my new house and my 36X60 insulated garage has too much room in it. Bring the Crx, Civic Si, and the Stang down. After that, park each one in my garage and I'll see which one looks best. You can take the other two back home with you

Love my 1st gen CRX!

It's almost bone stock and locally competitive in STS too. Rust free GA car (originally Heath McMillan's car). I could be tempted to sell it, but it would be tough to let it go.
