Found the car. AE82 Liftback, no rust, bad auto trans, good 4a-c, $400, 15 minutes from my house.
Not many will be expecting that particular car to have anything except an anemic 4AC... blacktop swap should be easy enough since the wiring lays out similarly
Curb weight is right around 2000 lbs. I'm wondering if that's light enough for a good old 4age 16v to make it scoot.
Pretty sure if you cross reference old info on the Prizm GSI (yes it is a slightly newer) or car that predates the Prizm the late 80's Nova with the 16v 4age you will have an idea of straight line performance. If you keep this plan up I will be forced to look for a 4age for my Prizm Lsi.

Come out to the HSCC autocross on March 26 and I'll give you some inspiration! Look for the white FX16.

tepid air intake
I have only experienced lukewarm results from this mod.

Too expensive to need a transmission swap. Do FX16s have the same seats as Tercel wagons?
Do you have 3 FX's or is it a small club?
More awful cellphone pictures. The Corolla gods smile on me, the interior isn't blue! It's plaid!! And I don't know why the steering wheel is riding shotgun.

The FX16 seat mounts most likely will be different from the Tercel.
The silver FX16 is a parts car. Must have spare parts for old cars right?
The silver GT-S I bought new, but needs a complete rebuild.
The white GT-S is the autocross toy.
Pretty close, way better upholstery though . I never got why they had those weird handles on the sides of the seats.

Those are oh berkeley handles for the rear seat passengers.
Those seats are actually quite comfortable.
So, let's say you've got a plain jane Ae82 in white with grey interior. Where would you source rear disc brakes? Or a suspension? Or...let's say, a transmission. What's the range of mix and match for trannies bolted to A engines? What's a good transmission to keep an eye out for and what makes it good.
And the "learn me" part just kicked in.
Since my "learn me" Prism thread went nowhere, I am copying your notes and worksheets. I still doubt I will pass any quizzes, but I am still learning from this thread.

What year is your Prizm?
Prizm GSI 0-60 is 10 seconds, .25 miles is about 17 seconds. I think that's about the same as my old Volvo 245 Turbo slushbox. Numbers look slow, but man did that Volvo feel fast.

Not SURE... but likely the FX16 rear disc brakes can be swapped into the Ae82.
Suspension bits... I'm not as familiar with fwd stuff... but there is always DIY coilovers.
Concerning transmissions, that there is a significant variety... C50, C52 - 5 speed transmissions found in ALL fwd, and the 1st gen MR2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_C_transmission I do know the bell housing sections can be swapped in many cases... so it might be possible to run a modern 6 speed... if you can find one. You MAY need a transmission shop to mount the bell housing (do to possible shimming required)

Suspension: Ground Control sells a coilover kit for the FX16, should fit other Corolla's. Front struts allow replaceable cartridges. Rears have limitd options. However, Koni sells a 'cut-a'strut' system. You cut off the top of the old strut and remove the internals. Drill a hole in the bottom of the cartridge and drop in the new cartridge and bolt down. This should work if you have OEM struts in the rear. The aftermarket struts are too narrow to fit the Koni's. I have heard some Camry cartridges will work but you need to re-drill one side of the lower mounting holes to fit the Ae82 suspension. Not sure what year Camry has what can be adapted.
There is a lot you can do, but you need to be innovative to find what fits.
Went and looked at the Corolla today. Was in the middle of nowhere, parked on top of a mountain. It's been sitting there a while, by the looks of it. There's one rust hole at the bottom of the driver's side front fender, nothing terrible. Seller said he'd started it up a couple months ago. We gave it a jump and a little starting fluid and it fired up. It ran pretty good. Trans is certainly trashed. I put it in drive and it made a host of scary noises. Also one of the CV axles was in the back seat. I don't know why. haha. It gave a little smoke when it started up. Seller said he put some kind of stabilizer in the gas. I didn't know what he meant.
I liked the position of the seats. You could actually sit in them. It wasn't that seat-on-the-floor-legs-forward sort of thing. Shifter is kind of weird, it's way down on the floor, instead of on a raised console. I was kind of surprised as to how small those old Corollas actually are. I think it's smaller than the 1980 model I had.
To the experts/nerds: What is an "ECO" button do? It was on the dash next to the AC button.
ECO is usually to recycle the air and stop bringing in fresh air.
Wait, so I can take an MR2 trans? That's pretty cool. Sounds like it should be easier to find. I feel like these E80's used to be everywhere and now they're getting kind of rare.
MINIzguy wrote:

Mine has an "ECON" button, it's separate from the intake/recycle control. I don't know what it does, I've heard it makes the AC clutch engage at different times.
In reply to GameboyRMH:
Weird.
Sounds like I need an MR2 parts car. Will an Mr2 manual rack swap over? I remember guys putting those in e7 Corollas.

ECON button operates the staged AC clutch. In theory, once the inside of the car is cooled off, the lower stage will keep the car cool and reduce the drag from the AC, thus improving mpg. Heh! It was the 80's.

AW11 Mk1 MR2 transmissions will bolt right up to the 4ag.
The steering racks should fit. A manual rack would be nice for a track car, but for street and autocross, the power steering is the way to go.
I've been wanting one of these from TwosRus
Quaife Quick Rack and Pinion - AW11 MR2
Quick ratio rack and pinion provided 2.5 turns lock to lock. Fits LHD AW11 MR2s.
In reply to trucke:
Now that I think of it, I think it already has manual steering. I don't remember seeing a PS pump in the engine bay. Usually it sticks out with that big Toyoda cap.
Another quick rack option is the 2.5 turn PS rack from certain AE92s - the GTZs all came with them, some hatches and JDM GTS models came with them. But those are made of high-enriched unobtanium.
