I have a chance to buy one for about $5000. It's an 03 stick with less than 50k miles on it. I put about 30k on my vehicles each year. Can I get 2 years out of this thing without becoming best buds with a mechanic?

thats harder to work on, and slower, and way way way uglier (than a NEON...think about that)

I guess I'm weird, but I like the way they both look when they aren't overdone.

You make it sound like someone is offering you a once-in-a-lifetime killer deal on a Jensen Interceptor or something...

Looks are subjective, but I think PT Cruisers are good cars. My brother has one and he drives the wheels off that thing.

The bride had an '04 PT GT. 5 speed. We traded it for a Flex in 2012 only because she's getting old & her hip is even older & shifting gears had become uncomfortable for her.

It was a good car, only non-regular maintenance issue was replacing camshaft position sensors twice in around 60,000 miles. That's a 30 minute $20 DIY job. The paint & trim & interior held up well except for those pretty 5 spoke chrome wheels developing a bit of rust. IIRC timing belt should be replaced at 90K & that's an aggravating job on this car. Also IIRC the engine was built with cracked rods & is good for tremendous HP (600 or so) with the enough boost & other mods.

It was a quick car. I hardly ever drove it but it could be fun when I did.

Also, if you drive it another 60K , that'll put you into timing belt replacement territory. $5K sounds a bit much to me but I haven't researched the market in a couple of years.

A timing belt is what, $6-700? I could live with that. What would throw me is a bad transmission or an engine that blows up before 100k even with letter perfect maintenance or electronics that bungee jump.

the power steering pump is a B-I-T-C-H to change, so don't ignore leaks or put anything other than the recommended fluid in it. headgasket is about a 6 hour job in a tech setting, 9+ at home. timing belt is easy, just sucks to pull the motor mount.

$5k is high. unless its REALLY pristine.

I would not pay $5K for a PT Cruiser. Maybe $3500. And that is a serious maybe.

Interestingly, when I chatted about buying a Chev HHR for my business, I got positive feedback. They are kind of the same car. I paid 5k for an 0...8 I think. I forget already. But its a nice little car and I don't mind driving it when I have to.
