My wife really wants us to get an ND Miata when they come out (hey, I'm not complaining) and we have this funny idea to try and sign up for the Launch Edition. Yeah I know, marketing gimmick and all that, whatever.
The way I understand the process, if you happen to be one of the lucky few who get to give Mazda a deposit for the Launch Edition, you also tell them which dealer you want to pick up the car from. My concern at this point is that the dealer at least thinks they have you over a barrel and can have their wicked ways with your wallet.
While I'm happy to pay MSRP, I wouldn't be happy to pay over MSRP. Anybody got any advice on how to avoid paying MVA, apart from leaving the dealer's premises with a finger in the air if they're not willing to budge?
And yes, unless the amount required for the deposit goes up, I can afford to lose the deposit.
If you're paying the deposit to Mazda, wouldn't the price be set at that point?
Wait 6 months, or pay the idiot tax.
Good for you & your wife - I'm sure you'll have a blast with it!
Somebody needs step up in place of all those complainers & whiners over on m.net.
I suggest calling your chosen dealer and asking how they'd handle it before you select.

Depending upon how well it sells and/or how stubborn the dealership is, 6 months may not be enough for them to stop trying to sexually assault would be purchasers. My local Scion dealer was still adding ADM over a year after the FR-S came out and I think they had 4 or 5 that had been sitting around for at least 6 months.

Walk in make you offer, they can accept or you walk out, do this at multiple dealers, one will bite.

Can you get S Plan pricing?
autox a Mazda 2 times, sign up, profit on your next Mazda purchase
I don't think any of these things will help him get a Launch Edition.
In reply to evildky:
That's what I'd normally do - actually, I'd do it by email, but that's neither here nor there - but in this particular case, you have to tell Mazda which dealer you want the car delivered to.
Unfortunately the Mazda dealer in town closed, the closest one in Reno doesn't seem to have the best reputation on Yelp, so this is going to get interesting...

Unfortunately SF1 is right, although that was the backup plan if we don't manage to sign up for the launch edition in time.
Mind you, that'd require me buying a Miata to autocross first.

In reply to BoxheadTim: you don't have to OWN it, just autocross it. And it can be any Mazda.
Prices For the 2016 MX5 have been announced.

Meanwhile, a Premium Ecoboost Mustang coupe costs $29,625 and a standard GT costs $32,625.
Have Miatas always cost as much as Mustangs?
(This is a genuine question, and not a "the new Miata sucks" comment--I always assumed Miatas were a lot cheaper, but I never really paid attention.)

Given my mechanical failure rates on my own (track) cars, I really don't feel comfortable autocrossing other people's cars.

They made cars other than Miatas, RX-7s and RX-8s?
@Will - iceracer quoted the MX-5/Miata prices including the destination charge. Ford adds another $825 to the prices you quoted for destination.

That's a lot of change. Don't get me wrong...I love Miatas, but the new Mustang is a lot of car for the same money. Plus there's room for tiny humans and groceries.
Would your wife be willing to wait until the 2017 model year so Mazda can fix some of the engineering flaws?
Based on some googling, you could get a 1990 mustang lx 5.0 for 12k.
1990 miata was 14k.

Maybe - I think if we don't end up with a launch edition without price gouging, we'll probably wait at least until we can see how the prices develop.
Actually I'll probably end up with a Miata or RX7 in that case and autocross it for Mazdaspeed eligibility.

The same debate as Mustang vs MGB 50 years ago. And the answer's the same isn't it?

Talk to the dealer you want to purchase from. When we bought our solstice Gxp coupe the dealer agreed to sell to us at msrp when we placed the deposit...that was good enough for me. The car came in and we got it for the agreed upon value. There were several in line behind us, so they could have easily tried to gouge us or pick another person willing to pay more, but they didn't.
Same with our local porsche dealer. I recently called about trying to get on the list for a cayman gt4 just in case they are as awesome as they look on paper. They said they only sell at msrp for specialty cars like that, and have the track record to prove it. Unfortunately I'm 10th on the list and they might get two lol..... Oh well it was worth checking into.

Your deposit on the launch edition is refundable. If the dealership tries to screw you, bail with your money. The entire roll out of this new model has been a comedy of errors, one right after the other.
Nearest dealership is in Reno, what are you in Winnemucca or something?
In reply to Toebra:
Good to know re the refundability of the deposit.
I'm in Carson City, we used to have a Mazda dealer in town but that closed around the time I sold my last Miata. Now it's the one in Reno with the not so great reputation, or going down to Sacramento. The one in Elk Grove seems to have pretty decent reviews...
In reply to Cotton:
I'll probably give the dealer I have in mind a call in the next few days and see what they have to say...

Pretty much, yes.
My '99 was $25K (leather package, pretty much fully loaded), which was about what a loaded V6 or a stripped GT Mustang cost the same year.
