OP. Was that a 3rd Gen 4Runner you had? What again made it a "Death Machine"? Just wondering because I have a 2004 Tacoma TRD DBL Cab pushing 200K that hauls around a 6-month old. As for the Tacoma, if you plan on keeping it a longtime, I'd go new. You have seen what used ones go for. FWIW, I was offered $10,500 trade in on mine a few months ago.

the issue was the rack and pinion split down the casting line. It was a cost down issue. there are two steel rings that used to be put on the ends to reinforce where the rack exited. In toyotas brilliant wisdom they decided to remove the $0.10 part from each end allowing the unit to split. 100% toyotas fault.

It was 148k when it went away.
