just got a text from the wife. The Rio windshield cracked from side to side on the way home. We have the most basic insurance because it's a $2k car, no comprehensive etc. What am I looking at cost wise?

Throw windshield replacement into the computer and you should be able to find someplace that will give you a quote over email quickly. Prices vary wildly between cars. We paid $300 and something for the FJ installed, but the R63 is something like $800 for just the glass.
Most windshields for common cars are cheap. $300 is about as much as you'll ever pay for a "normal" car windshield.
Safelight and a larger regional chain around here seem to have a price war. You can pay cash and get a new windhield in almost any common car for $200 here.
130 for my Mazda B2200 through a local shop. Even though it's not coverrd by your policy, you might reach out to your insurer to see if they have a shop they partner with. My windshield would have been 180 without their recommendation to call a specific shop and tell them I was an Erie customer looking for the out of pocket rate.
Just had ours replaced on our Odyssey, $264 (Safelite) - but that was through insurance. Not sure if that gets cheaper or more expensive dealing with them as an individual.
Its been a while but I paid less than 200 on an old Honda. A late model BMW with the auto rain deal was like $800 IIRC.
The last one I did was something like $200ish. That was for aftermarket glass. Volvo glass would have been $700ish (I think) and I really REALLY do not like funhouse mirror glass like some aftermarket windshields can be. Fortunately, i lucked out.
Downside was, I had to have the body repaired because the windshield cracked due to pressure from rust, which was completely nonvisible with the windshield installed. That added $300 and was a super good-buddy deal, I wouldn't expect to pay under twice that as a guy off the street.
So Jane Snapp is a bot. Got it. But I'm gonna plead ignorance here and am as such facilitated by local govt to ask is a cracked windshield worth replacing? We only do emissions. Save yourself the price of the car? Well the price of my cars. Combined. Almost. Does looking through a cracked windshield driving with even the most gnarliest of cracks cause you to achieve total automotive mayhem/death/destruction or does it matter not?
edit. I do not have gnarly cracked windshields. Did the wire wool thing on the SE-R which worked don't even see the one or two pits.
I just replaced the one in my RX7 for $230, I thought it would be much more due to an odd model 30 year old car. Call around and tell them you are paying with cash.
I like to use an independent. In the last two months I had my Miata done for 150 and my Civic for 175.
I always tell them upfront that I pay cash and that I will have the wipers and cowl removed when they get there to save their time.
I usually do them myself, but on my kids 9-3 the difference between buying the glass and having them install it was $70. No brainer. Come do it in my driveway. I need to do one in a buddy's TR8 for him. He had his professionally installed and now it drips right on to his radio.
