Found one semi locally that supposedly needs needs trans work, and some electrical gremlins chased. Coupe model, interior looks fairly decent. What should I we watching out for? How horrid are they?

Different gremlins for the different years, very different.
Transmission swap is not a fun job. Not special bad, just this is never a quick and easy job. Common tranny failures are the 2-3 shift ($30 10-minute part swap, usually), or wrong/dead fluid (= replace transmission)
Nice car, I like them. It's a possible car for me in the future when I decide to quit daily driving the Miata. But I wouldn't buy a project one. In good shape they are enough of a maintenance headache.
They're not worth much even with a good transmission. I wouldn't buy one with a bad transmission unless everything else was perfect and the price was scrap value. (Sub $600) even then I think something Rwd would be more fun.
I had asked about these a while back, but I was looking at 5-speeds. Still, some good info:

Thanks, didn't realize someone had already broached the C70 learn me.

That's the car I'm thinking about taking a look at, I could do without the wheels, but it looks decent even with CL craptastic picture quality.
I got an idea for a rabbit if you ever find one. :-D But wiring gremlins are awesome, but it sounds like the trans gremlins are the real issue. So pull it all out and go carbed small block?
